Where to stay for a site visit?

We arranged to have a preliminary site visit on august 15th. We'll be coming into Orlando on the 14th and leaving a few hours after our site visit.

Where did other people stay? We're thinking at one of the downtown disney hotels like the Hilton or the Palace. We figured we'll end up spending most of the night in downtown disney and it makes sense to just stay somewhere we can walk to. Is it worth renting a car for the day? I know we can taxi it to Franck’s, but after the cost of getting to and from the airport it may make sense to just get a car for the day.

Have other typically done this short visit, or do you usually roll it into something larger?

Thanks

~ Chad

If you have AAA, Pop Century has been the least expensive off ALL the hotels around. Even w/o AAA its the cheapest.

We are going for our first visit to Francks on Aug. 5 we live in Florida so we are driving up the morning of and we will be staying at the Boardwalk Inn and taking the bus to Magic Kingdom and then taking the monorail or boat to The GF (It is also my B-Day and me and my DF's anniversary so we are making a weekend of it)

We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside, very easy to hop on the boat to DTD. We got a really good AP rate too.

KT - This is a bit off topic, but with your AP was the rate better than Shades of Green? I really want to try POFQ, but we had such a great rate at SOG and I loved it there!!! Just curious.

My site visit is Aug 15 also :thumbsup2 We're staying at POFQ, and that is also very convenient to DTD.

@wdwprincess03 - Thanks for the heads up. It seems pop century really isn't convenient to any of the things we're doing. For just 1 night I'm willing to pay a litle for convenience, but not so much as to just stay at the Boardwalk or GF.

@KT27 - AFAIK the boat to DTD only runs until 11. Is that still correct? How is the trek home?

@JJClemson - Is that your only reason for going to WDW, or are you staying a few days? We're not even planning on going into any of the parks. Just getting in and out.

We stayed at All stars movies for our site visit. We used Magical express and took the bus from asmo to mk than monorailed it to the gf so we never had to rent a car and I think we paid under $100 a night for the room.

We stayed at the Boardwalk Villas - but our site visit was part of a larger vacation with my parents who are DVC members. When we went down a few months later for our planning session we stayed at Pop.

It wasn't supposed to be a longer vacation, but with the free dining, that's what it turned into. You may also want to try to rent points from a DVC member. That can be very cheap if they need to use the points by a certain date.
