Just wondering what airport everyone uses for Hilton Head. We are hoping to take a trip next fall and I am unfamiliar with the area.

Savannah GA (SAV) is the closest... about 45 miles out....

the next is Charleston (West Virgina I think) and that is about 95 miles out...

There is an Airport in HHI.... but I have never looked into that option, figuring it would be $$$, and only small planes can land there.

I think Laurabearz meant Charleston, South Carolina.:D

We always fly into Savannah's airport. It is an easy drive (45 minutes) and they have rental cars there.

It's a easy drive from the Savannah airport. Less than an hour and the rental cars are on site.

West Virgina just didnt sound right at the time, but I gave it a shot! ROFL

The drive from SAV to HHI is a lovely one, I hear... the first time I drove it, it was raining so hard and pitch black at 3 pm... made for a long and stressful trip. Still.... We cant wait to go back!

Thanks so very much!! I am trying to talk the hubby into a trip for our 10th anniversary next year. We have 71 points left and that is exactly what we would need for this stay. Now if I can only talk my parents into watching the kids!!!

We have flown into both HH and Savannah. It is an easy drive from Savannah, but I love flying into HH itself when the price is right.

I generally bring my Mom who is in her 80's, so if we can fly directly to the island I prefer to. We fly from Boston to Charlotte to HH. The airport is small and about 10 minutes away from the resort. Also, the planes are small but we've never had a problem.

Either way, enjoy HH. We love it there.

I think the only commercial flights directly to Hilton Head Island are on USAir from Charlotte.

I think you'll probably find better fares to Savannah, though, and since you'll need to rent a car anyway.

There was another thread about this. But we flew to Jacksonville and another poster also said it was cheaper for them. Also the rental cars are much cheaper here. It's about a 3 hour drive to HHI.

That fare to Jacksonville would have to be significantly cheaper to make the extra 3 hour drive worthwhile and while it might make sense from other origin airports, it would have to be darn near free in this case. With the wonders of modern aviation routing, both US Airways and United are showing connecting fares from New Orleans to Jacksonville through Charlotte, NC which end up flying darn near directly over Savannah, GA and HHI.

In Kayla's case, a MSY-CLT-SAV routing would make more sense, and I expect American Airlines would have something routing through Atlanta. Northwest and Continental seem to be lost causes in this case with routings (even to JAX) going through Houston. That's the wonder of the hub system.

Happy Flying!

Given the expense of flying to Charleston or Savannah from Chicago my wife and are using Rapid Reward vouchers to fly Southwest Airlines to Orlando (they don't fly to either Charleston or Savannah). We're going to spend two days there and then make the 5-hour drive up 95 to HH.

We'll save $1,500 in airfare for three people, minus the $400 we'll spend while we're in WDW. Nonetheless $1,100 in savings and two days in Mickeyland ain't a bad deal.
