Where the Wild Things Are- just saw it (just got a SPOILER)

It just didn't have enough to do with the book as it should have. Oh, plus the acting was bad. And the new story they put in sucked.

I didn't like it.

it started humorously and light hearted, and then it was dark and sad for most of the story, but the ending was very hopeful in my opinion. which, if you read the book, is very much what happens.

it wasn't what i expected, but i did very much appreciate the movie for what it did accomplish. it wasn't a children's story, it was very much an adult movie about family, growing up, and having to make hard decisions.

I have never read the book. In fact, I don't think I ever heard of the book before. Was planning on going this weekend. We have a friend who saw it with her 8 and 6 year old... the 8 year old didn't like it, and the 6 year old left crying in fear, according to the mom...

A DVD rental for sure.

I loved this book as a child and have had mixed feelings about wether or not to go see the movie. I am thinking about maybe going when our theater has their $4 seats during the week. Still not sure though. But thanks for the heads up about it really not being for younger kids. My cousin wants to see it and at 6 I do not think this is the movie for her.

I read the book as a kid, but didn't care of the movie. It was slow and boring and very weird. I wouldn't take the kids either, they are going to either be bored or scared.

It's a children's classic but the author, Maurice Sendak and the director, Spike Jones, have been interviewed extensively saying the film was not for really small children but more for adults. I would consider age 6 a really small child and I work with kids this age all day long. Parents should do their research before taking their kids to see any film.

I love the book too much to touch this with a ten foot pole.

Exactly. Its one of my favorite books as a kid and I've said to people " I will not watch a descrecation of one of my favorite books"

Oh oh! My DD s hosting her DD's 8th birthday party at the movie theater and they are seeing this movie. My DG Dloves this book adn the girls have been so excited. I hope they are not disappointed.

Honestly, as a child, I didn't even like the book, so it was a no brainer for me not to go to see the movie.

That being said, I've heard, from most people, that it wasn't all that great.

Are you serious?!?! I thought the acting was phenomenal!!

And it kind of had everything to do with the book..it's just that there really isn'st much to the book, so of course, they had to add, but they pretty much used everything from the book in the movie.

Again, I loved it...but I think it's one of those movies that's not for everyone. I can see why some people may think it's "weird."

You are now the 10th person that I've read that didn't like it. Seems like a huge miss for the movie. I heard it was very sloooooow. And kind of dark. I have an adult friend that walked out of it! She said it was boring.
Too bad I wanted to see it. But thanks for the review I'll save our $$

Now you know 12 people who hated it. We did not take our DD. I did not like it and DH hated the movie. I am sure our DD would have been scared. We had heard it might be too scary for younger kids, so we decided to go first. I am glad we did not take her.

Well....voice of dissent here...

DH and I saw it tonight with our six year old son and we all three loved it. My little guy was really into the imagination and adventure and I thought the visuals were stunning. We all thought it was great. :confused3 One of the best "family" movies we've seen in a long time.

Of course, I will also say that, as a family, we LOVED some other movies that seemed to get horrible reviews on this board....The Tale of Despereaux, Coraline....just to name a few.

DH and I loved Coraline. I had read the book and knew what to expect and we did not take DD.

I never saw Despereaux.

I haven't seen it yet, but I don't want to-not because I don't think it looks good, though. I think it looks sad! I think the book is sad enough, so I don't want to see the movie (hate crying in movies). Also, I have read several of Dave Eggers's books- wonderful, dark, and moving. That's kind of whatI expect from the movie. Oh, and for the record, we loved Coraline, but my kids aren't easily scared.
Papa Deuce- You'd never heard of this book?!? Next you're going to tell us you've never heard of Goodnight, Moon! I can't stand that book, actually.

I'm surprised that some have never heard of the book. It is a children's classic. If you haven't read it to your kids, I really encourage you to go out and buy it (or borrow it from the library). It really is a nice story and can be read in less than 10 minutes. It was one of my favorite books, and it's now my sons favorite. They can recite it by memory.:goodvibes

I'm sad to see this movie getting bad reviews, since we are huge Maurice Sendak fans in my house. We'll go out and see it today, but I'm prepared to be disappointed. Then we'll probably come home and watch the cartoon version of the book made by Scholastic books Dvd's. It is an exact duplicate of the book with a narrated voice. My kids still love it.

I guess we won't be seeing Sendak's "In the Night Kitchen" made into a movie now. Another one of his great stories. Oh well.

My 15 son and his girlfriend saw it yesterday;), they both liked it.

Night Kitchen is a great book.. and a movie, well just don't see that happening.

Isn't it great? Scholastic books released a dvd collection of with several Sendak stories. I'll have to settle for their version.

I never read the Book either, just doesn't interest me at all...:confused3

I have never read the book. In fact, I don't think I ever heard of the book before. .

I can't believe that people haven't read or heard of the book. :confused3
It was one of my favorite's as a kid and my girls loved it. I worked at a daycare with 3 year old's once and they requested that I read that book every day! :goodvibes

Wow, DH and I just got back from watching it and we both LOVED it!

First of all, it is NOT a children's movie at all. The children in our theatre were clearly bored and I'm not surprised. It was definitely a movie for adults about childhood.

It was slow and dragged a little but I was never bored because the characters were so endearing and entertaining...and the little boy who plays Max was fantastic! I think I had a smile on my face the whole time, just at how wonderful the visuals were.

It had a great message...you can't run away from your problems, even in your imagination.

I saw it with my 9 year old and 3 of her friends- we all loved it! The acting was great in the movie! I was no disappointed at all in the movie!

DH and I loved Coraline. I had read the book and knew what to expect and we did not take DD.

.

I took my daughter and some friends to see Coraline- we all loved it! My daughter has it on DVD and watches it all the time!
