Where should we stay?

Hi all

We are DVC members and are planning a family gathering next year. We have 3 families coming down to stay a week in Disney World before our cruise. We will be checking in August 12 and checking out the 19th. This is the breakdown:

Brother and Family= 2 adults and 3 children (ages 8, 14, 17)
Mom and Brother= 2 adults
Myself and family= 2 adults and 2 children (2, 11)

We definitely don't want a grand villa as we want to have some privacy and alone time. I was thinking of getting a 1 bedroom for my brother + family, a one bedroom for myself and a studio for my Mom and Brother. I realize my brother is a party of 5 but his oldest usually stays with me since my youngest will be 2 and in a pack and play.

I've been doing a little research and I believe it would be less points to get a two bedroom lock out my myself and my mom and brother instead of a studio. Just to clarify, a two bedroom lockout means there is a seperate entrance and lockable door between studio side and one bedroom unit side. Please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

We have approximately 600 points to play with. I was thinking OKW or Boardwalk but it really is up to availability since I own at HH we will be booking at the 7 month window.

What do you guys think?

Thanks mucho.

You are correct about the lock off. However, when rented as a 2 bedroom, all of the keys will open either door to the outside / hallway. Probably not an issue since you are all family.

OKw has larger 1 & 2 bedroom units than the BWV and also has two queen beds in the studios / 2nd bedrooms. The BWV will have a double size sleep sofa in the studios and 2nd bedrooms. However, all the 2 bedrooms are lock off units at the BWV - you may have some trouble booking a lock off at OKW.

I would expect to find availability at OKW at the 7 month window for August. If you are counting on standard view at the BWV, you may have a problem - especially since you will want more than one room.

Either resort would be a nice choice.

Best wishes -

If it was me, I would get 2 -2bedroom units at OKW. One for you and your Mom and brother (there are two queen beds in the 2nd bedroom there), and one for your brother's family. Those dates fall half in each of two different point seasons, so a 2 bedroom for the time you need is 278 points. I personally would not want to be your brother and have to deal with that many kids (including one teen) in a unit with only 1 bathroom. A 1 bedroom at OKW that same time is 206. For the difference of 72 points, I would go with the 2 2 bedrooms. You would only have to have one of them be a lock-off unit, and with the size of the OKW units, it might not be much of an issue. We have had guests who spend most of their time in their room rather than the common space. I would do the 2 2 bedrooms for a total of 556 points.

Thank you both for your comments. I do appreciate them!!

Diane, you are so right about my brother and the kids..lol I will definitely consider the scenario you presented. I'm sure that all concerned would appreciate it!! I'm laughing here as you pegged my brother right on.

Thanks again.
