Where should I shop?

This really is a serious question. I want to be an ethical shopper, and support companies that support issues I believe in. Since I believe strongly in equal rights for everyone-I want to shop at places that do too.

Does anyone here know where I can research companies commitment to equal rights?

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at HRC's Buyer's guide - they break it down into categories and rate the various companies.

http://www.hrc.org/buyersguide/

By the way, good for you - I wish more people thought about where their money was going.

Excellent. Thanks for the link-I'm going to share it with my friends.

It's good to see The Walt Disney Company scored a perfect 100 on the HRC list. That is where most of my extra income goes.

Interesting report - Thanks! I do see most that I shop / use their services at least offer same sex benefits. Much more than I can say for my company.

Kind of off topic but..... I posted a link to that very report on a different thread (on a different board) and totally got flamed for it!! (I think they said I was a pathetic person if I lived my life like that!) Anyway I am soooooo happy to see other people are like minded and find it in themselves to be responsible in the choices they make in regards to where they shop.

Pghlybrt, don't let idiots that make those sort of ignorant comments bother you one bit. Many of us do care about where our money goes, and what sort of company it is supporting. I carry it through to any professional service I need like a doc, or an attorney. If they can't demonstrate Lesbian and Gay awareness and support, then I don't hire them.

And yep. I ask.

So, we need more people to use their money that way, and less of the ignorant sort that made those comments to you.

I remember that thread, and you were one of the people that made me start to think more about where I shop. I realized that I wasn't taking my values into consideration at all when I went shopping. I was talking a good game, but I wasn't living it.

My suspicion is that the bashing comes from people who have had experience with extremists who have come after them for shopping at particular stores. I've had people come after me for admitting that I've shopped at Walmart and they've been downright nasty. The reason I posted my question here was because I felt that if I posted it anywhere else I'd get bashed for it and start a war.

Interesting... I'd never buy Shell gas or Nike but they are both HRC corporate sponsors. It's tough being a conscious consumer.

Wow thanks! :flower3: It is nice to see that my words did make someone reflect on what they do.

Like I said on the other thread I take more into consideration than just the HRC when I shop. I am also one that wants to make sure products are not tested on animals, I like to buy locally, I try to buy made in America ect. Yes ,It can be expensive but I have said before I am much bigger on experiences than on "stuff". I just do not think it hurts to think for a few seconds before buying.

And I am not one that will look down at you or make comments about where you shop, I save that for comments reserved to what football teams you cheer for!:rotfl:

What's wrong with Nike, then? I saw them on the HRC site and I thought they were ok.

I would imagine they meant the extremely bad working conditions for workers.
Here is another site you might want to look at, they also have great links from there. And I am sorry to tell you more information about Wal mart.
