Where is it written not to use a pool towel if you run out of towels?

I think, if the idea is to control costs, it would just be best for DVC to pre-place the pool towels in our rooms, and if we want more, we pay for them. Make them a different enough color that they could be eaisly distinguished from the bath towels, so there would be minimal sorting required by housekeeping.

The other option would be to have no pool towels at all, like Disney does at the Value resorts, but I don't think that is the best option.

Think of this...

I go to the pool and use a towel. I take that towel back to my room for whatever reason - kids cold, I use it for my hair. I bring it back the next time I am at the pool. No extra cost for anyone as we usually go to the pool everyday or walk by it.

Now if you keep the same towel during your stay and everyone did that, we would need more towels and that would cost more money. But I am using that towel at the pool anyway so who cares if I take it back to my room and bring it back in a timely manner.

I am not talking about the people who are legitimately using the pool towels for when they swim. I am talking about the people who are advocating grabbing a pool towel when they need extra towels for their room. In that instance, there would be extra costs.

We stayed at a resort that did that. It had a benefit, when the resort expects you to turn in four towels or they'll charge you $30 per towel (they were nice towels), you don't use them to save chairs. But tracking kids towels for a week was not my idea of a vacation.

This is one of those things where we need to be careful because our behavior can influence future policy. When pool towels to supplement room towels (or just pool towels not getting returned to the pool) becomes too much for Disney to wish to manage, they'll fix it.

I have seen that at other timeshares too, and I've often wished DVC would do that. Some timeshares we have stayed at use a basket with towels of a different color for the pool towels in the unit.

I think that practice would greatly reduce some costs to DVC. The extra laundering for the pool towels mean they have to do some major towel tracking when people don't return them to the bins in the pool area. I'm quite sure there would be a significant savings to us owners if there were the same number of pool towels in the villa as occupancy. It would eliminate a lot of the need for towel packs too.

As I remember, those towels for the pool were Peach colored at the "other timeshare". Maybe they could bring back the old peach colored towels that used to be at OKW to leave as pool towels in each villa!:)

we must be a horror show. We always wrap up the kids in towels and take them back to the room, usually carrying the littlest one wrapped up. Usually take them back down the next time, but I'm sure we've left some, and I'm sure I've thrown them in the washing machine with the room towels and washed a load. That's probably a terrible no no. I'll probably forget to worry about it by the next time my kids get out of the pool and have to walk through the ac though. Oh well. Imagine, paying a few grand for dvc and not worrying about the freaking towels.

The only problem is that often for the 4 of us, 4 pool towels is not enough. We frequently get in and out of the pool several times, and my bathing suit holds a ton of water, enough to drench a towel. The towels also don't always dry quickly enough for us to use them again later in the day.

I can understand needing more than one for drying if your suit is the problem, but not for later in the day. Throw them in the dryer when you go back to the room as it doesn't take much effort or throw them over the railing to dry. Should be good enough for later. That's what my kids do at home while swimming in the backyard pond.

I agree that the dryer can easily be utilized for such "problems". However, OKW and I'm sure most Disney resorts have notices requesting that you NOT hang towels or swimsuits from the railings. I totally understand that too. First of all, it looks unsightly if all the balconies have towels and swimwear hanging from them, but also...what if one should "blow" off and slap some unsuspecting guest?

While we would never hang towels or suits over the railing, we have on occation hung them on the chairs of the balcony at OKW. I would never do that at the other DVCs though, because with the high rises, I would worry about them "going elsewhere"

IF that were the process I don't think any of us would care. There are several problems with your process though. You're assuming that you take a towel that you've used and that you bring it back. Both major assumptions that are not true for a large segment of the population. We've seen many a number of people post on DIS what we know to be true otherwise, that of going to the pool, grabbing an armful of clean towels and trucking them off to the room. That behavior significantly increases the pool towel inventory which you correctly judged to have a cost. It also increases laundry costs because those are towels that would not have been used and washed otherwise. It does one other thing, since these are not towels that are accounted for, those towels are more likely to walk than those in the room, esp from someone who's already shown their lack of character to save $6.

I totally agree, Dean, and I have personally witnessed people at OKW trucking large armfuls of towels back to their room, and not wrapped around their body. One young man had a stack so tall, he couldn't see over it. He was headed for the GV in building 49.

I must be missing something, but how do you "run out of towels?" Laundry is easy to do at a DVC resort, even if you're in a studio, and ridiculously easy in a 1 or 2 bedroom.

I am guilty of taking a pool towel upstairs if I have a cold child to deal with, though.

In general I'd agree but I think there are exceptions. For studios it's not quite that easy, esp depending on the location of the studio at the more spread out resorts. Also, for some when they are at or near capacity, they may need more than is allotted. As I said on this thread and at the time, I feel there should be some flexibility with the system for studios but currently the rule is what it is and reasonable people will live with it and adjust and unreasonable people will look for a way around it.

Because some people feel they are on vacation and above doing laundry while on said vacation.

Diane - I never thought about the blowing part. We just throw in the dryer at OKW but have been known to put them on the chairs too. At home we put them over the railing, but I can't say we do that at OKW.

Its easy...shower in the morning...wet towels, head to the park for the day, get home and shower again to get the "Florida sticky" off...wet towel. If we have 2 sets (planning on purchasing the towel pack) then 1 set will have 24 hrs to dry till next use.

I am renting points for the first time, trying to see how we like DVC stays as we go just about every year and are tired of spending crazy amounts for regular rooms.

So here is the dumb question. How many towels will be in the room when we arrive for a 3 night, 3 person stay? My kiddos go through towels and I don't really want to spend time doing laundry on a short stay. So then, how much is a towel pack?

And nothing to do with this thread but can we request turn down service in a standard DVC room? Cost?

You will get as many towels as there are sleeping spaces. Studios and one bedrooms usually only have four. I did notice at OKW in January (we did have a renovated one bedroom) there were only four bath towels.

So it's time to train the kiddies to hang up their towels and reuse them. If they are clean when they use the towel, it should be able to be reused several times. Show them Jiminy Cricket and his Environmentality that he advertises at WDW.

I don't know of any DVC resorts that offer turndown service unless its the concierge rooms at AKL.

This is usually something offered at deluxe resorts.

We often grabbed towels from the pool, and even took them to the waterparks. The lines there for towels are crazy. We have never taken towels home or anything like that.

I just do not see the big deal about the towels, and I have never been happy about not being able to get more if needed. I always thought there should be an exchange station for towels located in various DVC resort areas. I do think calling housekeeping to bring more towels to a room would be cost prohibitive. Having members carry towels themselves somewhere to trade, not so much. Put it in rooms like the recycling and trash. I think the energy cost of each DVC villa washing and drying towels is more than them being washed and dried at a central commercial laundry.
I agree home away from home that cost me as the other post pointed out several grand. When I want a towel I will get a towel. I will not pay 6 more dollars. I think that is crazy. And if they limit how many towels I can have at the pool I will be doing alot of complaining.:laundy:

Other non-DVC timeshare purchases and dues also cost their owners "several grand" and many have much more restrictive towel policies than DVC. Ownership does not "entitle" us to break published policies, quite the contrary, we all agreed, in writing, to abide by the policies.

And some of us with over 1,000 points like myself are in this for way more than "several grand", and do not want to pay even more to replace pool towels because so many are dispersed throughout villas, water parks, and elsewhere. We would sometimes purchase souvenir beach towels for the children to use at the pool on vacation. Nice to drape on a chair to rest, and warm & cozy to wrap up in to walk back to the room..

This is why we have rules to follow...to save the DVC Members money overall by charging those who need more towels $6.00 per pak.
