Where in the world have you traded...........

I attempted to find my last trip report and provide a link but I was not able to back far enough to find it so I'll just give you a few highlights and you can get back to me if you have any other specific questions.
The Cordial Golf Residence where we stayed is a very nice resort and is located in a quiet, remote area of Tuscany. It's about 120 miles north of Rome and about 10 minutes to the beach from the resort. The resort has a section of the beach that is private and for use by hotel guests only. It's very nice and all chairs, lounges, umbrella's, etc. are provided.
The hotel is on a golf course and consists of separate villas that run off of several small roads that wind in and around the villas. There are two nice pools, one restaurant/bar area at poolside and ping-pong and other games at the other pool. There is another restaurant on site and another pub at the golf pro shop. You can get anything from pizzas to nice meals without leaving the resort. The resort is owned by an Austrian company and we noticed that most people at the resort spoke German. The hotel staff in the office spoke english and we did not have any problem communicating. The villa we had was a one-bedroom that had a separate bedroom with a king bed, a living room with couch and a couple of chairs and a small kitchen with a dining room table. The kitchen was equiped with dishes, pots, and it was easy enough to make your own meals if you wanted to. The bathroom was nice with a lot of marble on the floor and walls and the entire villa interior was a reddish, ceramic tile on the floors. I normally stay in a one-bedroom at OKW and am used to the size of these units. The villa is about half to two-thirds the size of a one-bedroom at OKW. The size was perfect for two people although there was a pull out bed that would sleep another two people. If I went back with more than two people, I would most likely get a two bedroom villa. This is a relaxing resort because it's quiet. What we really liked about it is that our main purpose for the trip was to explore the Tuscany area. This hotel is situated perfectly to make day trips if you have a rental car as we did, to the countyside and towns. The train was also convenient if you wanted to travel further distances or not drive into the larger cities. It was pretty easy to get around and everyone we met was very friendly and went out of their way to help us.
We flew into Rome, stayed the first night at the airport then got a rental car the next morning and drove up the interstate to our resort. It took about 2 1/2 hours to get to the resort from the Rome airport. The stayed at the resort for 7 nights and toured around Tuscany. We then returned to the airport, turned our car in and took a shuttle into Rome where we stayed 3 more nights and toured Rome.
The resort was nice enough that we would go back and I would consider it a Class 4 hotel if it were in the USA. Remember, if your looking for a quiet resort and you want to eat, lay around the pool and read, or take day trips into the small towns, this would be a nice place to stay. If you want more action and livelyness, you might like a bigger city better. It cost me 196 points for the week through Buena Vista Trading Company. All of our reservations went without a hitch.
We plan to go back in about two years and will stay at this resort for part of our next trip. Hope this information helps. Good luck!

Thanks for the info on Italy, that is very helpful. It appealed to hubby as it had the word 'golf' in the title and Italy is close!!!

Anyone else?! Where have you been......

What is Buena Vista Trading Co. I thought DVC could only trade through Interval International?

GolfGeek -

I was going crazy looking for your report to re-read. I could not find it and thought I was doing something wrong.

We would love to do a trip to Italy in 07. Could this trade have been done on a nightly basis? or just weekly? How far in advance did you ask for the trade?

I was born in Italy and have family in Sicily and would love to visit and take my "gorwn" kids who are very interested. Airfare in the summer is a killer, that is why I am "planning/hoping" for 07.

Without posting more here, would love some more info. Please e-mail or pm me (can I list email?).

i.e. - golf at resort, (for dh and dss), did you reserve car ahead of time?, Would my then 21, 19 yr. old sons and 14 yr. old daughter be bored here after a few days. Would also add a fee nights to Rome also.

Buena Vista Trading Company. It's essentially the management company for DVC but they they also do direct exchanges with other systems. At the present time only Club Intrawest and the Cordial Group out of Europe participate. A number of years ago there were A number of west coast and HI options as well. If done right the idea is a valid one and I wish they would expand it further. Hyatt, WM and Hilton are good potential options but there are others. You can only trade non 7 day stays due to the potential conflict with the II contract. As I understand it it works something like this. A DVC does a trade then one or two from the other system, back and forth. They can't get too far out of balance obviously. I think you can only trade at 6 months out.

We have gone to the GC in DL; the Stein Erikson in Park City ,Utah, the Shelburne-Murray hill in NYC, and we are going to the Sands of Kahana in Maui in July. So for we have been very happy with our exchanges.

WE have traded out 3 times so far. To the Polo Towers in Las Vegas, to Keystone CO (can't remember which resort) and to Mauna Lani on the Big Island. Trades have been pretty easy to get and we have had no complaints with the resorts.

...I'm either too picky or too impatient. On two separate occaisions, I put in a request just over a year ahead for 4-6 resorts being flexible by a few weeks and had waited a couple of months each time before giving up. One time they did find a close match but it wasn't exactly what I wanted so I passed it up. Since we usually use frequent flier miles, we don't have the luxury of being able to book flights a few months ahead. We really need to have an exact date about a year ahead so we're not the typical traders but I'm glad to see it works out well for many folks.

We stayed at Charleston Place thru Conciere Collection before a HHI stay and that was nice but it used more points than I like to part with for one night (although they gave us a mini-suite with a corner view which was nice). The rest have been private trades. Timeshare Users Group is a fantastic resource. Private trades take a lot of trust but we've had great experiences.

In 2002, we traded for a week at Four Seasons Aviara was wonderful - once we saw Carlsbad, CA we were ready to send for our furniture and just move there - we loved the area. Last year I traded a few DVC weeknights for a few nights at Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki - that was a perfect trade; it was just enough time to add to our week in Maui. I rented a 1 bedroom condo on Maui since I got a great price in the location I wanted ($140/night oceanfront in Kahana).

Giving up at 10-11 months out will almost never work with II exchanges. And to be honest, 4-6 resorts over a few weeks during prime time may not be very flexible either but it depends on the actual demand of the area and weeks. Say for Aruba you'd likely need to put the entire Xmas to Easter and that many resorts to be considered flexible.

You're right Dean. I realize that trades don't usually come up at the time we need to lock in for date and location so that's why I do private trades. And, yes, I'm not that flexible on resorts even though we always travel off-season. I'm glad we all have options that fit our needs.

We've done Concierge Collection at the Plaza and Charleston Place- we loved both. This April we are going to Royal Mayan in Cancun on a trade. It only took a couple weeks for this to come through.

The FF issue is a major problem for some with II. In many situations it's best to lock in your dates with the air fare then hope for the best on a trade with a back up cancelable cash option.

Well, I've never traded my DVC - it's just too valuable to me to use anywhere else but DVC. But I do have other timeshares to trade that are less valuable to use for trading, and have never really had any trouble at all. I've also used II getaways a lot. I usually stay in non-peak times that still have good weather, like May or October in Hilton Head. So far, I've stayed in 51 different timeshares, all either II 5 star or RCI gold crown. (7 DVCs,
11 Hiltons, 8 Hyatts, 16 Marriotts, and 9 others.) Some of my trades include Sanibel Island Florida, Cancun Mexico, Newport Beach Calif, Palm Springs Calif, Hilton Head SC).

Thanks for all the great responses so far:
* How was Polo Towers in Las Vegas..........where in Vegas is it, which hotels is it near? How did you rate the accommodation in comparison to Disney?

* DownontheBW: I was really interested to hear that you'd traded to Four Seasons Aviara.........we are thinking of adding this to our current request for Four Seasons in Scottsdale. Tell me more about the resort and Carlsbad itself as I don't know the area. Is it nearer to San Diego than LA? What time of year did you visit? How long in advance did you request?

Still no luck on our resorts and dates.........but it has only been a month so far!!!!
Debsx

we've done Disney swaps and concierge collection - Disneyland and Grand Californian, Disney Cruise Line (x3), Arizona Biltmore x2 (stunning), Charleston Place (awesome - and going back for Christmas / New Year), Boston Harbor (world class but welcoming), and Equinox (Vermont) (cold and distant)

Apart from Equinox - all swaps have been first class - Concierge Collection is easy and quick and top quality.

question on Charleson Place, would you use the points to do club level there? Is it worth the extra points? Thanks!!!

Debs Hill: The GF was wonderful! You are right inside the CA park. I believe it was designed by the same people who did the WL and AKL. I felt it was worth the points.

Harborside Atlantis in the Bahamas is nice. But there's really no place like home! :earsgirl:
