Marathon Weekend 2026

SAFD on Monday morning: Driving down early Tuesday morning, lunch stop at Murray Bros. Caddy Shack, and on to AoA. Arriving around 3:00, Epcot evening. Wednesday-short acclimation run around Hourglass Lake, Thursday-Expo, Friday-Mini Golf and HHs, Saturday and Sunday-run Goofy, Monday- DATW! And also during the week- 9 park reservations (APs), 5 dining reservations, shopping at DS, and maybe a quick nap!

SAFD: just checked into my DCA flight tomorrow morning! Hoping to land around 11, head over to our rental car place and then All Star Sports to drop our bags. I got a really good AP rate, and added the dining plan so we get mugs for our entire stay! Just saying there for one night before going to CSR. Fiancé is asking to do a DVC tour (which we absolutely will not be buying right now) but they offered us $200 in GCs for attending. Hoping to take our $200 in to narcooses that night for a dinner on Disney!

I got that $200 offer too and very tempting - but I just don't see where I can fit it in!

Just checked in for our 7:20am flight out of Houston tomorrow! But, woke up in the middle of the night with an irritated throat. Immediately popped vitamin C and did a Zicam swab. Vitamin C, Zicam, hot water and honey, and DayQuil are on the menu for today. It's not bad, just hoping it doesn't turn into anything more.

With only a few days to go before the start of the races, it’s a good time to dust off the annual reminder that the hay is in the barn. As always, thanks go to Charles for first writing this many years ago. :)

The Hay is in the Barn
I used to hear this weekly back in my high school days (and yes there were high schools back then). Coach would walk in Thursday after practice and tell us that the Hay was in the barn boys, enjoy the fruit of our labors. If you think about it, he was correct. We have all spent the training season growing, harvesting, baling and stacking our hay for future use. There is not much more that any of us can do from now through race day. Seriously, a marathon is not an event that you can cram for. I know there are a few who can simply head out and run one, but most of us need to spend the next couple weeks allowing the body to absorb the training from the last few months. Many do not understand that the work (running, lifting, etc) is not where strength and improvements come from; rather, its the recovery periods just after the work where they occur. Its happens as a result of the muscle repairs those tiny little micro tears that occur with all workouts.

Its taper time... Yes we do need to be out and running. Taper is seriously misunderstood by many runners. It is not a time of kicking back and not doing anything. Taper is a reduction of training volume. Volume = intensity x time. In many camps it is thought that intensity should remain high through taper. I am in that camp, at least for most runners. Distances, ie time, are reduced dramatically while the mid week intensities remain just as high as previous work.

The exception to the above... If you are injured or ill, I would just recover. Do not run or otherwise aggravate your injury. Give the joint time to heal up. If ill, its still ok to run, but keep it light. The general rule of thumb is that if your cold or illness is above the neck, head out for your run; if in the chest or below the neck stay in.

NERVOUS?
It is normal. Remember how nervous you were the first time you entered a race. These are the same nerves. If this is your first event, it is very normal to have a set of nerves during this period. Tapering tends to bring the nerves out as you are not working out near as long as you were just two weeks ago. Trust me, even the most seasoned runners have similar nerves. Maybe we just hide them better, or understand them better. But watch as you are in the corral on race morning. Folks are burning off nervous energy in various ways. Make a pledge to use your nerves to help get you to and through the race. Once the gun goes off and you just hit the point where you are sweating, your case of nerves will soon disappear.

Have fun, enjoy your race(s), and cross that finish line with a smile on your face!

Love it! This is one of my favourite posts of the year and couldn't agree more!
We are having it serve as our transportation to dinner 😂 since they will drop you off anywhere on property after, next stop grand Flo!
Smart!! Where are you doing your tour? Wondering if they are still doing them at BWV - I might be able to get that to work.

Thank you for sharing. I always look forward to reading these words. Looking forward to a challenging but successful weekend. And good luck to all!

Good morning! Hello again, and thank you for the amazing spreadsheet--I have learned so much from it! And to all of you, again, for your encouragement and advice.

One more question, that might be too specific--I am trying to do a simulated race morning this morning in terms of when I get up, what I eat, etc. What I'm most curious about right now is probable transportation time from my resort to the start group. I was lucky enough to find a Poly Tower studio, so I'll be taking the monorail. Is budgeting an hour enough time to get from my room to the TTC to the start area? Or is 90 minutes safer? I know the Poly and monorail pretty well and know it would be enough on a normal park day, but I'm not sure how much crowds and security changes things on marathon morning ...

Thanks in advance if anyone knows!
I love staying at Poly on race weekends because of the monorail transportation! We like to walk to the TTC and take the monorail straight from there. For the marathon in 2024, I remember waking up at 2:50, eating (a lot of) graham crackers, getting ready, then doing a really slow jog to the TTC to get the blood flowing. I took a picture of the Epcot ball as we went around it and see the time stamp is 3:35. I was happy to get there early for a 5:00 start, but felt like I could have left even a bit later :)

Haven’t been following along, but wanted to reach out in case anyone wanted help marathon morning with balloon lady tracking. Did it last year with several different runners and had a few finish within a minute ahead of them. So, fruitful for the runner experience. I’ve already got a group I’m tracking, so figured I’d reach out and see if there are any others that could use assistance. I’ll keep track of the 7hr pace group (close to balloon ladies) and then can do on the fly calculations for you based on your splits as to what the minimum necessary pace to stay ahead will be. Send me a DM if interested and we can exchange cell numbers. This is just for marathon morning as I’m not currently tracking anyone for the HM.

SAFD: I drive down tomorrow morning after squeezing in a 9 miler and getting my Kindergartener on the bus! So excited! Hopefully will arrive around noon to POP and then head to Epcot for a couple hours before monorailing over to the Poly to take a work call and then eat an early dinner. I have a 6pm ILL so I can ride Tron in the dark haha. Wednesday morning will be expo then AK in the afternoon, doing HS after the 5k and MK after the 10k. Will hit a few rides in Epcot after the half then chill at the resort to rest my legs (optimistically bringing my bathing suit). Marathon day is up in the air depending on how I feel. Cannot wait to get down there!

To anyone who is thinking of taking Billy up on his offer, DO IT!!! I cannot express how much this helped me last year. The ability to not have to do running math and to turn my brain off/save those brain cells for other things made all of the difference in the world.
