where does "more cowbell" come from?

This is obviously from a movie or something that I've never seen, but I see t-shirts at my school (and at WDW for that matter) that say "More cowbell". Can someone enlighten me please, so I don't sound so stupid to my students?

It is from a Saturday Night Live skit with Christopher Walken, Will Ferrell, and some others from a few years back. It is really, really funny (at least to me).

It was probably one of the most funniest skits ever on Saturday night Live with Christopher Walken and Will Ferrel. It was Blue Oyster Cult recording and Christopher Walken kept saying it needed more cowbell. As the skit went on nobody could keep a straight face!

there's a SNL skit in which Christopher Walken is a record producer and he's going over the recording of 'Don't Fear the Reaper' with the 'band'. Will Ferrell is a band member doing nothing but repeatedly hitting a cowbell. Walken keeps stopping them and saying "ya know, I think we need more cowbell" in his Christopher Walken way.

If I recall correctly it's from an SNL skit. They are Blue Oyster Cult and they are recording Don't Fear the Reaper. Well Christopher Walken plays the manager and Will Ferrel plays this obnoxious guy who does the cowbell part in the song. Well everyone else is getting ticked off at Will's character but Christopher proclaims that what the song needs is "More Cowbell"
