We are planning our first trip to Universal Orlando in Oct 2014.( I was a fool thinking I have been to Universal Hollywood a bazillion times it's the same thing) . We are planning on 3 nights (before going to the other World) and are leaning toward Hard Rock. Other than that I know nothing. What are good places to eat? What are must do? I am a WDW and DLR pro but a total USO newbie...help

You can start by going through the stickies at the top of this forum. They are a wealth of information and should provide you with lots more questions!!!

Margaritaville is pretty good, BTW the perfect margarita on the menu is amazing, and so are the nachos. Believe it or not the Sushi bar in the Royal Pacific hotel is AMAZING, we never miss going there. Emeril's is nice but the kids don't like having to get dressed up to go there. Not sure of the name but the restaurant at citywalk with the dueling pianos has the BEST red beans and rice nachos, EVER! At Universal Studios everyday they have a MINION MAYHEM parade and all the Despicable Me characters some out dance and then mingle and take pictures with the crowds. Than Animal Show at that park is also worth the effort. The Beetlejuice Show is ok, if you like Karaoke, and I feel inappropriate for younger kids. The Horror makeup show is NOT suitable for kids. IF you go to the exit at the Despicable me ride before it lets out, you might be lucky enough to get some one on one time with a couple of minions. Can't think of anything else right now, if you have your own car, there are TONS of restaurants int hat area where you can buy gift certificates on restaurants.com and save some money on dining. I will head back and read your OP and see if I remember anything else, have a great time!! We love going there.

How in the WORLD could I have forgotten MYTHOS??? this is my favorite restaurant in all of Universal. You can get a reservation ahead of time by calling their reservation hotline. If you have kids be sure to order them the sushi dessert! My kids LOVE that part of the meal.

Thank you to all the replied... I am so excited

You can make dining ressies for MOST restaurants at Opentable.com
,ressies are not neccessary but nice to have. Some restaurants are a few months out, others 60-90 days .Bubba Gumps on Citywalk does not take any.

Why is the horror makeup inappropriate for kids? My son just loves monster makeup and was looking forward to that

They are lots of kids there. As long as he's not afraid of monsters, he should be fine. There is also a bra as one of the props, so I guess as long as he is okay with monsters and bras, he should be fine, lol.

Universal isn't always as pure as the driven snow like Disney.

FWIW OP, I took my 8 yr old to both Beetlejuice and Horror Makeup Show..she loved BOTH.My family took my niece at age 5 to both and she loved them as well.It depends on your kid, I imagine some kids might be fearful of the Horror show. But I agree with Damo, While Disney tries to tone it down in deference to small kids, Universal does not .

Most especially love the Sushi bar at RPR! Best sushi ever!

This post makes me laugh. My son is fine with monsters not so much bras though... But I think he will survive

My favorite restaurants are:

City Walk:

Margaritaville
Emeril's
Latin Quarter Cafe

IOA:

Mythos

US:

Finnegan's
Louie's (counter service)

All of the hotels have at least one good restaurant as well.

Other than that, I recommend that you just relax and enjoy your visit. It is nothing like Disney in terms of having to pre-plan, etc. Much more laid back. You will have plenty of time to do everything you want as much as you want given that onsite visitors have unlimited express pass usage. Honestly, when we go we actually like to do Disney first because it is so much more hectic, then take 3-4 days at UO to take a vacation from our Disney vacation.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tips. After a few trips to wdw I have realized my travel style is opposite of a lot of people. I like to start off relaxing and then go go go. When we go to wdw he hit the ground running and mid trip I hit the wall. I don't adjust to the time change very well. I want to start off slow and laid back.
