I got my dog from an ad in our small town paper for mixed breed puppies. I also got my cat the same way, from an ad for free kittens. So I chose 'other'.

Got both my babies from rescue. I found it so rewarding I'm now a volunteer!

I got my Benji from www.Petfinder.org He is wonderful!

I got 4 of my 5 cats from shelters, and my DD's bunny came from a fair in PA.

You didn't have my answer in your poll - we got our fish and guinea pig from a pet store. If I was getting a dog, I would look at a shelter.

Our kitty was a stray. My dad found him wandering around a job site where he was working.

I got both my cats from a breeder in Canada. They flew from Manitoba to Chicago where I picked them up.

Found our kitty as a stray. Actually, she found me.

Hey, it's my 1,000th post!

A good friend found her (animals gravitate to her). She already had two large dogs, really hunting dogs, and she was afraid they would chew this dog up. She knew we were looking for a dog and she could tell how sweet the dog was. She knew I had promised DD9 (4 at the time) I would get a family dog if she gave up sucking her thumb. She gave it up in less than a week (guess I used a good incentive).

I chose other. My fiance bought me my birdie from PetLand last June. He bought me Spike, his cage, food, & toys. It was a "just because" thing. :)

Xander, we got from a german shepherd breeder here in NY and Kipper we got when we lived in FL from an ad in the paper.

We always contact our vet. Someone there is always "fostering" to someones unwanted/uncared for pet. My last dog we got through them had been rescued as a pup from someone who left him in his cage night and day. The one before that had lost his "mom" who had been hit and killed by a car. The owners brought the pups in and the vet found a lactating mom for them.

Got our golden from a breeder, one cat from my dd's cat...the result of a drunken room-mate letting out a cat in heat, and the other cat we got from our local nursery...they had a few barn kittens to give away last spring.

Gracie and Daniel were shelter kitties (Gracie an adult, Dan a kitten) and Bagheera just showed up on our doorstep one day and we took him in.

Harley is from a breeder, but when we adopt another it will be a rescue - I am not willing to do the tiny puppy thing again, as cute as they are, and we want to help a dog in need.

In my city we have something called PAWS. It's a volunteer society that rescues stray and abused cats and dogs. They give them veterinary treatment, have them spayed/neutered, socialize the animal and then adopt it out to a good and loving family (though you must sign a contract with them that says you will not declaw or abuse the animal).

They are the best society I've ever seen. Rarely do they ever have to put the poor things down and they will keep track of the pet and the owner for a minimum of 6 months to be sure they are adjusting well. If they are not, then the society will gladly reclaim them and adopt them out again.

It's Other for more than half of our 16 cats. BTW, even though they are all indoor cats, I am NOT moving to Wisconsin but that's another thread.

Let's see...

Kitty: Stray found at about 5 weeks old

Calico: Possibly feral. Was introduced to us by another cat who showed up at our door and lived out the autumn of his life with us.

Mollie and Tessie: Bought from a lady who developed severe allergy problems after she got them.

Rusty: Got him at the MSPCA (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)

Jasper: Got him at the MSPCA

April: Got her at the MSPCA

Chester: Got him at the MSPCA on the day they were going to put him to sleep!

Cricket: Got her at the MSPCA.

Little Kitten: Got him at the MSPCA.

Cleo: Rescued from an abusive home. The owners gave her up after threatening to drown her.

Prissy: Belonged to my DH's daughter. We took her when his daughter was severely injured in a car accident.

Little Spooky: Belonged to the ditzy neighbors that lived behind us in Massachusetts. They had numerous cats, none of which were spayed or neutered. She had a litter of kittens in my attic! She managed to find an opening in our garage that lead up there and that's where she had her babies. I caught her moving them out on a very hot day and brought her and the kittens into the house.

Mom Cat: A cat the above neighbors abandoned after they were evicted from the house they were living in. She was very people shy... almost feral. We captured her about 3 weeks before she had a litter of kittens. Once she saw the kittens were interacting with us she came around pretty quick.

Buddy: He was found walking down the middle of a busy street near my house at about 4 weeks of age. We had a mother cat who had 2 week old kittens at the time (her name was DeeDee) and she ended up adopting him and saving his life.

Legs: The day before the above neighbors moved they brought him to me and asked me if I wanted him. I asked the guy what he would do if I didn't take him. He mentioned the pound but I saw something else in his eyes. :(
Leg's was about 6 weeks old at the time. The following day I took him to the Vet and one of his legs was broken.

Wow, that was like a soap opera. :rotfl:
