Where did the term "McMansion" come from?

Hmmm, what is a McMansion? How about a huge house on a regular size lot where the owner can not afford to add a patio at the walk-out basement door or a deck off the one-story-high kitchen door, has his BBQ grill sitting on the driveway and is now selling the house. I drove past one of those this weekend.

Sounds like the neighborhood I drove by - all nice large houses (3000 sq ft) but the driveways and even the community streets were gravel. Ahem, budget for the driveway.

Wow, that was a bit condescending of you don't you think? You even said yourself "IF" so you don't know for sure. I was simply pointing out that McMansion was used here when the big homes that all looked pretty much the same came out in the early-mid 80s. It had nothing to do with a larger home being buit at all. Then again my area is known for some larger homes in general, so seeing a larger house in the suburbs doesn't make me bat an eye or think of "creating" a term just for it. Well I guess there is a term... "large home".

Sorry I did not mean it to be condescending. I guess that is why debating is not allowed here...

I did not intend to enforce the "correct" usage either. Just commenting and replying to comments.

I was also just commenting, but your reply to me more or less said "you are wrong". That's not what I call debating (which is allowed here as long as you don't make it personal). That's why I said it was a wee bit condescending. If you look at a few other posts above mine, a few others seemingly took you to be doing that as well.

If I misread you, or misunderstood you, then I am sorry as well.
