Where did our hamsters go? Another update (possibly the end) Final update #183

Oh man......not good. It was 5 weeks for us here.....don't lose hope. But I do agree, with no food eaten, it seems kind of grim. :sad2:

I read a few pages back that they are dwarf hamsters. That's what my son had about 8 years ago. After we got him, I did some research and discovered their lifespan is very short (around 18 months) which is exactly how long ours lived. He developed a tumor(also very common in dwarfs) and died in his sleep. After that I decided if we ever got another hamster, it wouldn't be a dwarf. Heck, our goldfish lived longer than that hamster did.

Our hamster has escaped twice. The first time we found her the next day in the corner of the closet behind the toy box. Second time took 4 days to find her and oddly enough she was out in the hallway (behind the cat's litter box), brave little thing. They can hide in very small places. But, they are usually nocturnal so if you look during the day you will have better luck looking in hiding places. If you put out food, definitely do it at night.

We have a basement pantry. I found some droppings on the shelf.....

Now, we have had field mice get in the basement before, but we are hopeful.....setting some ways to catch them today and we will see what happens.

We just found our little runaway after 3 weeks on the run. There was no sign of him until I pulled out an old bag of potatoes from the back of the pantry and saw they were half eaten. I cleaned out the bottom and not a drop of poop! We pulled out the refrigerator and saw poop! He also chewed the backing off the frig and must have made a nest inside. I set up food and water in the pantry and waited early the next morning. he came out and went into the pantry and I was able to trap him and get him back to his habitrail....for a life sentence!

Bet you were never so excited to see rodent droppings!! :lmao: Good luck..........

PIXIE DUST NEEDED!

We have found solid evidence of something in the basement! May be a hamster.

I found droppings two days ago on the shelf in the pantry.....today found that something has been eating our ramen noodles!

Trap was set (using the stairstep idea and a bucket) but my boys used a ramp and it was knocked down sometime last night.

So, using books tonight and a good strong cheese in the bucket.
:wizard:

We don't hear anything though and we have sat in the dark listening.

How do you refer posts to the Tag Fairy???

OP, I know how upsetting it is to have a missing pet, but I am picturing that and laughing.

I hope you find your hamster. He could be hiding in a closet because he's afraid of your dogs. Can't say I blame him.

:thumbsup2 :lmao:

And actually, re-reading her last post, any of those sentences would do also! :rotfl2:

Yes, but how do we alert the Tag Fairy? With the same methodology the OP is using to try to trap her hamster?

(OP, we aren't laughing AT you, we are laughing WITH you. Provided, of course, you are laughing. If not, my apologies. And I do hope you find your hamster soon. It sounds like he is living on the same diet as most college stuidents.)

Oh, not offended at all. It is funny if you aren't having to deal with it! :rotfl2:

Someday I will look back and laugh. Everyone does laugh when I tell them what is going on!

Hamster Watch 2010! :goodvibes

Wishing you lots of pixie dust tonight Dawn! My dd's hamster considered pecans to be a huge treat, maybe you could add some of those to the bucket too.

Glad to see an update that looks promising!

OP - could you please edit your original post for any updates? It's a little hard to scroll through all the replies.
