Where did my Sudafed go?

OK, this isn't about WDW but I needed to vent. EVERYONE in my house is sick with a cold. I ran out of my Nyquil & Dayquil a few days ago. I LOVED how Nyquil would knock me out even if my nose was a mess. When I went to replace it I discovered ALL the pharma's replaced pseudoephedrine (generic form of orig Sudafed) with Doxylamine succinate. The pharmasist swore it would work the same so I plunked $11 for the Nyquil/Dayquil combo. NOT! The new Nyquil left me & DH in some kind of crazed daze. My body was exhausted but my mind wouldn't turn off, I kept drifting in & out of sleep for hours until it was out of my system enough to take a sleeping pill. :furious: :furious:

I just went back to Wal-mart because my kids need stuff because they are sick now too. Wal-mart will no longer carry liquid Sudafed. All the brands still have the original names, Sudafed, Robitussin ect but NO_ONE mentions the new formulas on their labels. I had to stop my Mother-in-law from buying the wrong stuff. The original stuff is behind the Pharmasist counter and requires a photo ID to get it. I now have to piece together a collection of the individual drugs I used to use because no-one seems to be carrying the pseudoephedrine any longer!

I needed this stuff when I fly to keep my ears from exploding. I need this stuff when I am sick!

How come our entire society has to suffer because a few use it for methamphetamine! NOT EVERYONE has a methamphetamine lab in their basement!!!!!!!! How about they just put the drug makers in jail & keep them there AND GIVE ME MY DARN pseudoephedrine!

OK, I think I'm done now.

Has anyone given this new stuff to their kids and does it make them as crazy as it did me the other night?

I am sorry you aren't feeling well. I take sudafed a lot too - for allergies and sinus issues. The new stuff doesn't bother me or anyone in my family at all.

I'm sorry you are having a hard time with it.

You can get the 'old stuff' behind the counter at most drug stores (you have to sign for it now). I bought Mucinex for my son a few days ago, same drill. Evidently kids misuse anything with phenyl...... (you know that long word) in it. So now it's under lock and key.

I actually heard an ad for Claritin D the other day that said it would not be changing and would still be made with pseudophedrine, but you would need to get it at the pharmacy counter. It's nice to hear that someone out there is sticking to the original formulation.

As a general rule, if you want something with pseudophedrine, ask the pharmacist to see what is being carried behind the pharmacy counter!

No one in my family has had any problem with the new formulations of cold meds. But I have heard that it isn't as good a decongestant (doesn't work as well).

Good Luck!

I'm sorry that you are having a bad experience with this. I totally agree with you about the everyone having to suffer because of the idiots with the meth labs. If you think it's bad for you, let me tell you as a pharmacist that it is even worse for us. We are heading into the busiest time of the year for prescriptions and now we have to deal with filling out paperwork to let you buy Sudafed?!?! Not to mention, we have to remember to check back and make sure you haven't bought 'too much' in too short a period of time so that we don't get in trouble. I don't mind counselling someone about cough and cold medications when they need information even if I end up getting a little behind filling Rxs. But it is ridiculous that I have to make someone who is waiting for their medication to be filled in order to hand someone something that they already know about/need/or want. It is nothing but a bunch of red tape. And trust me when I tell you that the people with the meth labs aren't going to have a big problem driving around to get their pseudoephedrine. This new regulation would be laughable if it weren't so aggravating.

Anyway.....just FYI....You can still get the generic liquid pseudoephedrine behind the counter of many pharmacies. It might be a good idea to call before you head out just to make sure your pharmacy carries it. I don't think that Sudafed makes the original in liquid any more though. You will probably have to get a different brand/generic. I hope this info helps. :)

Nyquil does the same thing to me. I can't sleep! Try the new Zicam Cold med-in-a-spoon products...they seem to work for me.

I'm with you, OP.

It is wiggity wiggity whack.

My coworker was complaining about the same thing a few months ago when she was sick and passed it around to the rest of us. I found that you can buy the old formula stuff on drugstore.com but you can only buy 1 pack every 30 days or something stupid.

I'm with you though its frustrating when you find a drug you like and then its taken away so then you get to start experimenting with others. I finally found an everyday allergy pill - Allegra - that doesn't keep me up all night long.

I wanted some Advil Cold and Sinus, and had to 1-get it behind the counter of Walgreens 2.-show my I.D. which THEY put int the system and 3- purchase it and leave. :confused3 One bad apple DOES spoil the whole bunch! :sad2:

I agree with you 100%! the new stuff doesn't work for me AT ALL!! I need my original formula.
Does anyone know how many pills you CAN buy a month? I should stock up, just for when I do have colds, I will be able to breath! :teeth:

I just bought some pseudoephedrine , pharmacy brand, not name brand, and it worked great!!! Yes, it is behind the phamacy counter and you have to ask for it. They swiped my driver's license through the credit card machine and I had to sign for it.

WOW this may be true in your area, but we have had several meth labs busted in our area since the new law took effect. Law enforcement and the pharmacies work together to try to fight the bad guys that caused this whole mess.

I can relate to what you are saying about wasted time, but we have seen results that make our time spent more than worth it. :thumbsup2

Just to clarify - doxylamine is an antihistamine that was present in many cough/cold medications anyway. Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) has been replaced by phenylephrine - that is the nasal decongestant you will find in the reformulated products.

I second my fellow pharmacist that this one of the most toothless laws the goverment has enacted. The reasoning behind it is necessary, but the execution is very very poor. Too many holes that the heavy duty meth-producers know how to work around.

Many companies chose to reformulate their product, some (like Claritin-D) kept it the same and some have 2 versions - make sure you ask at the pharmacy: Tylenol Cold/Sinus, Advil Cold/Sinus, Aleve Cold/Sinus, Mucinex D, Alavert-D, Pediacare for Kids are just some of the brands that are still available in its original formulation. There is a generic liquid available but you may not find it in a store brand - it's something we have to special order at our pharmacy.

have you tried the HBP (high blood pressure) sudafed. No stimulants that make the heart race. But that, of course, is only my very unprofessional opinion.

MIkeeee

Thanks for the sympathy everyone. :disrocks:

I'm still cranky and trying to concoct the equivalent to Nyquil from individual meds. If anyone knows of a website that cites the original formulation (5 mg of this, 10 mg of that) I would be thrilled to have it, at the moment I'm just going by memory. I'm just trying to get through the night so I can cook a Turkey tomorrow....Good times, Good times

I still want my old Nyquil :genie:

Who knew I was such a fan. I use it once a year, tops and now a good nights sleep is as gone as the original Nyquil. Rats

AH! You just hit on my pet peeve of the month. I've been sick and going through cold meds like crazy since I started student teaching, plus I still have to buy the meds for my kids when they're sick. There is nothing more miserable than feeling sick, standing in line at the pharmacy, and being treated like a criminal for wanting some cold relief. :furious:

What's the limit per month anyway? And how do families of several kids do it anyway? :confused3 People do happen to get sick at the same time, so I'm sure it's easy to go over the limit. At one time in my house, it was me and both kids taking the Sudafed, and then just me and DS. It never seems to end.

You should ask my stepfather. He stockpiles the stuff because he believes Sudafed pills cure everything from runny noses to cancer.

We've been making do with the shelf stuff, Vaporub & humidifiers. With all 6 of us battling this nasty cold going around, I can't tell you how much cough medicine we've gone through in the past couple weeks. If we had to do the ID swipe, they'd probably think we were running a meth lab by now!

I slept OK. I guess my combo of lowest doses IS the same as original Nyquil was even if it is a pain to put together.

Now I have the problem of DS having this too which is triggering his Asthma. He's has 2 attacks in 10 hours. His inhaler is working but the breathing & coughing scares me to death every time :sad2: No more sleep for me today, I'm off to go stare at DS and make sure he's ok.

BTW, we all had our Flu shots. Does anyone know what is going around?

I don't know what's going around, but we had it too! I just got off of the Dayquil/Nyquil routine. Both are nasty tasting stuff! But the Nyquil is triple nasty. I had to work myself up to take it. :crazy2: YUK. I think they make it taste so bad that you forget all of your troubles! It did work for me. But I had to break down and go to the Dr. and get some antibx.. So glad I did. I'm feeling much better. The respiratory thing held on for a week & 1/2 and I was coughing up stuff.

The doctor said he's seen the coughing last up to 2 weeks! :sad2:

Someone said they bought some mucinex for their kids. How did that go? Would you recommend it?
