When your home alone......

I used to hate it when dh had to travel for work and I was home alone with the kids. Now, he works 3rd shift and I have had no choice but to get used to it. He's been on 3rd for over a year now and I'm better. We have an alarm system, so that really helps my peace of mind. The only thing that really freaks me out is if our dog gets to barking and won't stop in the middle of the night. I know it is just that she sees a squirrel or something, but it still worries me. Also, she will sometimes jump up on the window-seal chasing bugs and it sounds like someone scratching on the door- really gets me every time. Other than that, I'm ok usually. Really bad weather scares me some- like tornadoes. There are nights that I just can not go to sleep and that isn't fun. We recently changed to digital phones and have discovered that they don't work with the alarm system (they promised it would) so we are waiting for them to switch it back to the old phone company. In the meantime, the kids have been sleeping with me.
Just please don't let the dog see a squirrel or rabbit!!!:lmao:

DFi is on 2nd shift, which is a bit better than 3rd, but I still don't like it. He gets home around midnight, so I don't sleep much at all until he is in the house.

At my Grandpa's house I was walking down the stairs and looked up into my parents bedroom and saw a ghost :hmghost: walking around and walked downstairs told my mom and when she came back up there was nothing there, but I swear I saw a ghost whether anybody believes me or not is their descretion, but I will not be convinced otherwise.

..considering that grew up in a haunted house, I can very much sympathize!! I really did - it was freaky - I could tell some wicked stories that would make your hair stand on end!!! :scared1:

I'm home alone tonight, tell me some ghost stories :hmghost: Please, please, please

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one that does that to themselves. I love watching Ghost Hunters and any other ghost shows. It's not only ghosts shows that freak me out to watch at home alone, but shows about aliens and big foots do it to me as well.

Me too, I LOVE all those shows.

I sat on the floor of the living room, with my back against the couch facing the door. After 2 hours the door opened and there stood my 6'3" tall Dad. Of course he was wondering why his 18yr old daughter had a gun pointed at him. I explained about hearing the scratching. He said that if I had just let our cocker spaniel named Lady (yes, she was named after the Disney movie) in the house, I wouldn't have had to sit pointing gun at the door for 2 hours.

:rotfl2: This is why I don't own a gun. I would end up shooting my cat on accident or something.

Hey! 27 year old baby here too! :lmao:

I get myself all freaked out late at night too, when DH and DD are asleep. Stinks because I can't wake DH up over a little noise! He'd think I was cuckoo :P

I used to in my 20s get scared now I think I just am ecstatic to have alone time I am giddy if alone. Its a rarity here in my house with three teens.

No worries when I'm alone here. We have a 140 pound rottweiler who has a mean bark and very serious game face (though to friends and family, he's a big puddle of mush with paws). He's the best security system in the world. If someone is on our property, he knows it, and makes sure I do, too.

I have a hard time showering when I'm home alone especially if it's after dark. I don't know why, I guess it just feels vulnerable- soap in the eyes, don't have my glasses, can't hear over the water, not to mention being naked:rotfl2: Oddly enough if anyone else is home and awake, even a small child, I was always OK and never thought about it.

I have to say that it has gotten better as I have aged. At your age, I could hardly sleep when DH was away- I heard noises, saw shadows, whatever.
Now, I'm OK, although I do leave a couple of extra lights on and try to shower before dark:thumbsup2 .

I used to get freaked out if I had to stay by myself at night. Then my DH moved for a job 6 months before I did. Since I couldn't go 6 months without sleep I learned to deal with it. Now it wasn't all fun and games but I did eventually get used to it.

33 year old baby here!!!:lmao:

My dh is a fireman and therefore gone 1 out of EVERY 3 nights. He has been a ff for 10 years nearly and I'm still not used to it. Some of my habits have changed but all in all I'm still a nut job when he's not home.

We live out in the country and even though our neighbors can see my house I doubt any pay any attention to me.

We have a great security system with glass breakage/window monitoring where they can turn on the house and "listen" in if something is in question. BUT I don't care. I know how easy it is for someone to get around the system not to mention I hate it when it goes off during storms when the phone line goes down. THat just makes a scary night worse for me.

I always leave on 1 or 2 lights and the kids ALWAYS sleep with me. That way if I hear a noise I'll know that it wasn't one of them.

The worst is when the dogs start barking and I can't see why. Drives me nuts. I pace the floors thinking of every possible cause.

I hate it, but I have to deal with it until he retires.

:offtopic: (to myself)

I am not to far from you. About 20 miles south! I am confident you know where. ;)

I don't get scared at night now that I live in an apartment because it is small and I feel contained. But, when I lived with my parents in a big house any noise would scare me. And yes I believe in ghosts as I have seen several in my life.I think my parents house was haunted because I only noticed paranormal activity there.

i'm not too scared in my own house (although I definitely close the shades). we have an alarm and a dog, and neighbors all around us. But when we go on vacation and we're in something bigger than a hotel room (a townhouse or something), then i'm nervous, even with dh there. There's no alarm and no barking dog, and i feel like there are so many doors and windows someone could break in when we're sleeping.

It does not bother me at all. My husband works rotating shifts for the Police Dept so, he is either working 4-12's or midnight-8am. He doesn't even do any day shifts to break it up, lol.;)

I do close the blinds in the living room only because it is a really big picture window with two windows on either side of that. I hate walking by it and jumping a mile when I see my reflection.

This time of year if the ac is not on I have my bedroom windows open and the blinds only closed half way.

The kid's bedrooms are right across the hall and the two dogs sleep in my room. The Puggle is a barker. The Golden would lick someone to death if they tried to get in the house.

I do freak out if the lights go out at night and DH is not home though. That makes me nervous.

My 31 year old sister hates being home alone. She usually tries to get me to talk on the phone most of the night while I am enjoying my nice quiet house. She closes all of her curtains and blinds and hides in her room until her husband gets home. I think she brings the three kids into bed with her too. She moves them once he gets home. I would hate to have that kind of fear of being home alone.

I'm glad I'm not the only one ;) I get very freeked out when DH is traveling or is not at home when it's bed time  It's even worse when there is bad weather outside (pleeese, oh pleeese don't let the power go out!!).

Yes, I'm a big 35 year old baby too :)

Another 35 yo baby here :wave2: .

Well, for me - when I am home alone, I am just so happy that I can watch WHATEVER I want on TV - instead of American Chopper (hubby) or Noggin (kids). Ha ha! I get my HGTV fix!!!!! :rotfl:
