A few months back, I switched departments from the Emergency Services Department to the Sheriff's Office. A huge reason for my move was the fact that I felt underutilized and unappreciated. My former supervisor and co-workers wanted me to do basic chores like data entry and such. Okay, I can't complain about that since this was what I was hired for. But, every so often a legal question would come up or a discussion about law enforcement tactics and they would shush me out of the conversation. I did not feel that my 26 years of law enforcement, 17 of which was in police administration, was appreciated.
Fast forward to today. I am having a great time at the Cop Shop. I am feeling useful, productive, invigorated. My prior experience is appreciated. I am listened to. And today, I find a letter in my mailbox stating that I have been nominated and will be receiving an award at the upcoming gala. And I have only been here two and a half months! I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is all about (unless they give an award for "most grateful for getting the job").
So, my message to anyone out there who is feeling a little dissatisfied in their current job, don't be afraid to move on. The small pay-cut I took when I moved was well worth the job satisfaction and happiness I am feeling.
