when you have placemats on the table

I have never had a table get scratch by a plate. Our tables finish never gets water marks. What are your table made of?:confused3

We have a basic oak table. I never worried about marks, never used placemats, and thought it looked fine. However, I have to admit that after having the table for over 10 years you can definitely tell where we sit at the table! It looks like the finish has kind of worn off.

We had a bad ring on our dining table from a glass left on it. DH put mayo on it and left it for several hours, then wiped it off. After doing this several days in a row, the ring is gone!!!

I'm going to try this tomorrow!!

I use placemats WITH dinner. When dinner is over I wipe them done and put away. I do not like placemats on the table unless we are eating.

We put our dishes on top...that reminds me I need to wash mine today..

My placemats are for decorative purposes, so they get removed when I eat. I don't want to ruin them with spaghetti sauce or something stupid like that.

We only put the placemats out before we are about to eat?
And yes, we put all plates, mugs, dishes etc. on them. Our table is wooden and I don't want heat, water or oil damaging the table.
When we're done eating, we wipe them and then put them away ready to be used next time.

Our lounge is full of coasters too ;)

I don't understand why anyone would have placemats but remove them to eat. Enlighten me as to this reason please. I use placemats to save the wood on my table or to keep a tablecloth clean. I think that's what they are for, no?

In my opinion, taking them off is a nice move. If you don't have kids at home then you can place them again on the table after cleaning. In this regard you can choose the best machine washable placemats because these are easy to clean.

I've always been intrigued by these zombies. Do people stumble across the old threads as the result of internet searches then take the time to join the DIS and post? So many of them are resurrected by first-time posters...

right? Like how does one even get to this specific thread?

We use placements with chargers. They are just the cheap chargers ($2 each) you get from places like Michael's or Hobby Lobby, but they protect the table surface from heat. I change them out seasonally.
