When you get a pin...???

I am kind of unfamiliar with these "pins"? Are they just a random thing Disney offers to a few registered on their site? How do you know if you get one? E-mail or do they actually mail something out? Passholders eligible too? Is there a certain season or time of year more likely for one to get one or is it totally random? Good for all resorts or just value? Do they just go out to people who have not stayed with Disney for some time?

Lots of questions I know but can someone please enlighten about these pin codes and just exactly what they are and how they work?
