when you all read Davinci Code

Actually, if Jesus and Mary WERE married, as a female, it would actually be a positive in my eyes. My biggest "conflict" with my organized religion is the role of woman as I feel we are not viewed as equals. If Jesus DID see Mary as an equal it would probablly stregnthen my faith.

::yes:: That's exactly what I said.

The professor who spoke to our church seemed to think that the reason Jesus and Mary M. weren't married was because Jesus really had an issue with the patriarcal society that oppressed women: "you shall call no man father". He thinks it's quite likely they were lovers, but thinks Jesus really didn't go for marriage as it existed back in his day.

Why? The Ten Commandments do not prohibit sex outside marriage.

Well, technically it does.

I read the book and did enjoy it. Although I do know its fictional it did get me thinking about my religion. I'm catholic and I didn't find it offensive at all.

I just looked at the ten comandments, and I didn't see anything on there that said that sex is prohibited outside the marriage. Maybe I'm missing something, but, I always thought in the catholic religion, having sex and not being married is a big no no.

I really have to brush up on my religious knowledge. When my older kids were younger, they went to catholic school and always came home with homework, now my youngest goes to public school and attends ccd. and does all the work in her class, so, I'm forgetting alot.

Well, I disagree with the professors theory. Why would Jesus go against God's commandments?

"you shall call no man father" was not meant in the parenting context. It was meant in the worshiping context

Gen 2:24
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

and then we have:

1 Cor. 11:11

11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

Again, why would Peter write a letter to the Corinthians proclaiming one of Jesus's teachings if Jesus himself wasn't willing to follow it.

Jesus was baptized as an example. It certain would be logical to conclude for him to be married for the same reasons.

as richiebaseball says... Just one man's opinion.

That's true Ripleysmom.

But it depends on the definition of Sexual Immorality and Impurity. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus and Paul speak of this as a sin.

Now Jesus seperates Sexual Immorality and Adultery as two different things (Matthew 15:19). Furthermore Paul states that Impurity should also be put to death inside your heart (Colossians 3:5). I can site many other New Testament sources that say basically the same thing.

So if Adultery is sex outside the marriage (which in very ancient times may have only applied to the married woman), then what is Sexual Immorality? What is Impurity? Many things that would get bleeped here. I would think that Christ would have made a vow with God and the woman involved. She would have been pure as would have He.

But again it depends on how you define those three terms. The Bible is not clear as far as I can see on Sexual Immorality and Impurity. But from my studies, I am fairly sure in my heart that God does not want us to engage in sexual activities outside of vows before Him.

God's "law" is not limited to just the 10 commandments

Acts 15:20 referring to the law of Moses:

20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

1 Cor. 7:2

2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

I was looking for something like that dmadman. Thanks!

It goes on to say in verse 8, "Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion."

Another good point is that it's true that Christ came and gave us much more than the Ten Commandments in His teachings. And then God gave Paul the authority to teach what Christ had.

It is a work of fiction. It does not and cannot change my beliefs anymore than any other fictional story.

No - I consider it fiction. Although I do think the Catholic Church is capable of influencing the outcome of history in the early ages.

I thought the book was pretty interesting reading, but didn't take it seriously until I then actually took a good look at The Last Supper. Weird! I'm on the waiting list for "Breaking the Code" at the library, but I think I'LL have to break down and buy it!

I thought it was interesting, but it is fiction. Like the bible, it takes some historical places and people and puts them into fictional plots.

I can't figure out how it would so greatly change Christianity if Jesus HAD been married and had a child. (Unless, of coure, that is an admission that is impossible to be married and be sinless!) I even asked a theologan at our church and he agreed with me.

supper........I thank everyone for their response to this.....I seriously have been thinking alot the last few years if this was just man made information or if it all was something that really is true.....and I am not talking about the book.......this was just read a few days ago.....just a point in ones life when we question our faith......thanks again all of you for your insight

I heard it had been controvesial, but didn't even know what the book was going to be about. I LOVED it. I accepted it as a suspensful mystery and really not much more. I did think about the plausibility of the information presented, but it didn't cause me to question my faith.

My friend who is about to read it said people had told her it was derogatory to women and asked what I thought. What do you all think of that concept? I said I thought depicted women in their historical nature, not as offensive to women. It got me thinking about the book again, and I really can't find anything that made me think it was "anti woman" in any sense other than the story line of the book. I didn't see a hidden message. Am I just a little slow on the uptake??
