When will your kids have to make up "snow days"?

add us to the built in days. We have 5 or 6 extra days in calender. So we only have to make up if we go over that. We also don't lose days if we don't use the snow days either

My mom is a school teacher in a county right outside of Washington Dc. This is their policy.

State law mandates 180 days of school but allows for school divisions to make up missed teaching days by providing students with instructional hours equivalent to the missed days to meet the minimum 990 teaching-hour requirement. In PWCS, we have additional days built into the calendar (two this year at the middle and high school level, and one at the elementary school level) but we also provide more than the minimum time of required instruction with a six-hour school day. This provides adequate time to meet the state minimum number of teaching hours if school is closed for an extended number of days. This allows for up to 15 additional days for all students after the use of the “built-in” days.

So I guess my son will now miss last day of school and have an unexcused abstinence. Oh well, it's for disney and he is in Kindergarten!

I don't understand why his abstinence would be unexcused. If you're approving it and write a note to his teacher, it should be an excused abstinence and shouldn't count against his record. At least that's how it is at our school. Plus, the last day of school is just crazy. I'd rather be at Disney!

Have Fun!

Looks like we are safe if there are no more snow days this year...but wait there a snowstorm forecast this week. Ha, I already have spring break planned and booked. Don't have the summer trip booked yet, so if they do extend, I hope it's into the summer.

We're going until the last Friday of May right now but we've already used up our 13 (yes, 13) built in snow days. I believe if we miss any more, they are going to start taking spring break to keep up from going into June.

They build in 13 snow days in TN??? We are in Ohio and we only have 5!!! They give us 5 (although only 3 next year) but we don't get them back if we don't use them.

Oddly enough we still have 1 to give! This winter has been so weird. When we did get the HUGE storm it was on the weekend but other than that we haven't had to use too many because it hasn't been too frigid or ice storms or anything. I can't believe the number of days some districts have had off. We have had a rough February but nothing compared to some areas.

They only start taking away spring break if we use up ALOT of them. For the most part they add to the end of the year. We shouldn't have that problem this year and right now our school year ends May 27 but most around end a week later.

Well, I would hope the abstinence is not unexpected! I sure want my daughter practicing abstinence while she's in school!!

As for absences, though....

(sorry...spelling/grammar geek in me popping out)

I am usually on my game with grammar but I am actually at home sick with strep and the flu! So I do apologize my head is in the clouds today! :cloud9: Our school district counts anything unexcused for anything that is not an illness, death in the family or religious holiday. So family vacation is unexcused. We had to pull my ds out of school to go visit the family in Israel over winter break. So he already has 2 unexcused. So now he will have a total of 3 unexcused absences! I just need to talk to the school admin and see how this will play out!

Thanks,
Sharron

Oh, get better soon!

Many school districts allow 9-10 unexcused absences before further action is taken. Hopefully things work out in your favor!

I say that the school calendar or school guidebook should describe how school days lost to emergencies or weather will be made up.

I remember the school calendar from when I was in public school:

June xx -- Schools close for summer recess*

* Definite for elementary schools. Closing for junior and senior high schools depends on number of days classes are held which must be at least 180.

(There were a few extra days built into the calendar. In some later years seniors finished exams and graduation was held before the other grades had their last day.)

thanks for all the replies. I am thinking that school will tack on these extra days at the end of the year. We dont have to many other "places" to make them up. If they do shorten the Easter break I hope they decide soon. We still plan to go but may need to modify a little.I think they can only go up until June 30 if I am not mistaken.. Hopefully THIS storm is the last. It doesnt seem to be all that bad this time around.we'll see

Being in GA, we don't get much snow but we did get 2 days out for floods and 1 day out for ice.

We've already made them up. The County took away 2 teacher work days and Presidents Day that the kids were supposed to have off.

So the kids went to school on those days instead.

We've still got 1 or 2 more teacher workdays that the kids are supposed to be out that the county said will be used as make up days if needed.

I'm glad I don't live somewhere where there's tons of snow. I grew up in MN and hated all the snow.

So far here in wisconsin we've had 0 snow days so far this year - often we've had a few by now. We've have various days built into the calendar for snowdays that they have off right now but wouldn't if we needed a make up day. if there are too many they get added onto the end of the year.

We had no days build in, have 2 optional days at the end of the year (May 20 - 21) for snow make up, but we have had 2 days of snow, the kids made one up on Presidents day and they are taking a day in April that was a parent teacher conference day to make up the other. I doubt winter is over yet but our school system is a stickler for making the kids go regardless of weather, the surronding counties and neighboring cities have had in excess of 10 days already vs our 2.

We are from Michigan. By law we cannot start the first day of school until the day after Labor day in September...(which was very late this year..sept 8th?? i think) So our regular scheduled last day of school is June 11th. They never take days away from any holiday breaks or scheduled days off...they always add onto the end. We have had a very MILD winter up here...we have only missed 3 days of school....so i think we are going to be all set....all the snow has went elswhere this year, which is VERY unusual for us...all you others know how we USUALLY feel every winter!:)

We have 2 snow days to make up.. one will be made up in early March and then Easter Monday is being taken away. So we are still on schedule to end school in early June. But if we are hit with another huge storm, then I guess we'd have those days tacked onto the end of the year.

After the blizzard of 1993, our district built in snow make up days into the calender. I just wish we had a more even year round schedule. We used to start after Labor Day, now we start the last week fo Aug and go to early June.

No biggie around here. Snow happens.

Here in Arkansas we've missed a total of 7 this year!! Crazy! We are going til June 3rd, no Good Friday off either. We've made up 1 already with Presidents Day. Ready for warm weather!!!

With another storm on the way here, just wondering when these missed days will be made up? We are already scheduled to go until Jun 22 as it stands now and if they miss any days this week, looks like we will be at 3-4 days to make up. I hope they dont take it from Easter break . We are headed to Disney for Easter and its a surprise. Suprise may be on us if they cancel the break

If the cancel school tomorrow, the kids lose a day from spring break. If the snow day happens after spring break, I imagine they'll tack it onto the end of the school year, which is currently June 18th. We're in southern New Jersey.
