When to give up being optimistic and cancel March 2021 trip?

The vaccine could (should) be a game changer. It might be out before the end of the year in the US or at least early 2021, and maybe early 2021 in Canada. Don't give up hope everyone!

True, but it won't be available to the general population for several months after it arrives. Front line workers, the elderly, immune compromised...they are all the ones who will get it first. Not in time for March break I fear :(

I have a trip booked for March Break at Disney's Hilton Head Island resort. I am still holding out hope but if quarantine is still a requirement, I will have to cancel. I teach kindergarten so will have to be back in the classroom. As well, if the travel advisory is still in effect, I will cancel. I'll be making a final decision in early January but for now I'm still dreaming.

We have 6 day hoppers (initially 10) that were paused after leaving Disney the Thursday before the March shutdown. My hope is to drive down the last 2 weeks of august (my wife and I are teachers here), upgrade to an annual pass (never had them), then go the following march and early the following summer, as well as a possibly a short no-kids get away in between.

If you asked me a few weeks ago I would have said most probably not. But after seeing Bill Gates and Fauci last night, I am getting cautiously optimistic.

It now feels like each passing week will give us a slightly clearer picture.

For those worried about quarantining when returning don’t forget they currently have a pilot project for rapid testing at Pearson (for a couple months now) and recently started in Alberta at land crossing and YYZ airport in Calgary. You get tested when you get off the plane and quarantine until those results are back, up to 36 hrs, if negative then you no longer have to quarantine but you do have to report symptoms daily and complete another test in 6-7 days plus no visits to long term care facilities or hospitals for 14 days. If you don’t complete the second test then you automatically have to quarantine for 14 days. So far the results out of Pearson have been positive. They are hoping to have this released by end of year, beginning of new year country wide.

My sister lives in Tampa but is a Canadian citizen and was just able to come visit with my four month old nephew that we had never met !

She tested and isolated a week before she left Tampa and had those results the day she left . She then tested at the Tampa airport, on departure. She then was part of the Canadian pilot at Pearson upon landing and tested twice on this end. My parents have a separate contained unit in their house where she isolated while waiting for those results . We had just gone through a round of testing ourselves because of one of the kids I work with being ill, so we had some assurance on our end too.

It all worked out really well and we all got to FINALLY meet our nephew! She chose now to visit instead of Christmas to be ahead of the holiday travel in the US. They are heading back home today and hunkering down at home since Florida is still such a mess.

I'm so happy you were finally able to meet your nephew. Covid is messing up so many things we used to take for granted (being able to visit family and friends). I hope you had a great visit with your sister.

So happy you finally got to meet your nephew and see your sister! I know it's been stressfull worrying about them down there, must have been such a huge relief and I bet there were a few tears when you fianally were able to be together!

I’m so happy that you were able to meet the little one. These are definitely different times and we are all doing what we can. 😊😊

I’m hoping BC gets on board with this soon.

Pulled the plug on our March 24 2021 cruise today. Trudeau remarked today that the border will not reopen for many more months 😭😭 So even if the cruise sails (which I doubt) the border won't be open and the quarantine act will still be in place. I took the refund instead of pushing the $ forward because we have three others booked and have enough $ tied up as it is (all refundable however). 😭😭😭😭

We have a trip to Montreal end of July. We are American and hoping we get to come.

I would hold off. The quarantine timeline may change due to rapid testing and vaccines.

Disney just received ships in port canaveral this week and the parks are actively in construction and reopening modes.

I just got home from Florida and am looking at booking for March. Disney is great and will let you cancel last minute or moved without penalty (I know this as I have moved, cancelled, rebooked several times already)
as long as you can move flights id wait. It’s a bit till March and much can happen.

I bought into speculation and media hype and almost missed out on a great trip last week.
I wore a mask and cleaned and sanitized and I am responsible now in quarantine at home. I bought a temp taker and took it with me. I bought insurance that covers covid thru medipac and we were fine down there.
In The end only YOU can decide for you and your family and what’s best!

I cancelled out May trip today. The vaccine roll out will be slower than I’d hoped. I knew when I booked it was a long shot. But I know my kids won’t be vaccinated by May, so we won’t go.

Oh, interesting. I came here to ask specifically about March 2021 and here there already is one. Glad others have responded :). Me, I'm on the fence about this or rebooking to April. I haven't booked flights to the US yet (I waited until the last minute to do so last time... right before COVID closed the parks and I therefore had to cancel), but I rebooked the hotel room.

But with so much in the air, I don't know... the vaccine should change things, but what about the fact that it's not 100% at stopping it, potential changes in flights, parks perhaps still closing early, etc.

Another big deal for me is the lack of character interaction- I really learned to enjoy that last time I was there, and they were some of the worst cast members hit by the layoffs- will there even be any to be had at that point? What about parades and the Castle show? I was just planning on making yearly or semi-yearly visits to the parks and this put a damper on that- I don't want to "waste" a trip but I'd still love to go regardless, y'know?

We will probably wait until our final trip payment to Disney is due in March for our April trip to make our decision on cancelling or rebooking for later. I was so looking forward to this trip with our grandkids.
