when the skyliner goes down..

We had to get off a boat at DHS after boarding one evening to go back to the BWV. Boats weren't allowed to operate due to the storm. We got soaked getting to the bus, but it got us back OK.

I've seen reports of the boats stopping for severe thunderstorms with lightning, but I've never experienced it.

We were at OKW this past weekend and the boats to DS stopped due to lightning in the area. A CM said if lightning is reported within 6 miles they suspend service. Not sure if this is for all boats or just the ones going to DS from SSR and OKW.

The difference between the boats at BW/BC is that they are closed in. Most if not all the boats I have seen at DS running between DS/SS, DS/OKW, DS/PO are open boats, not like the boats at BW/BC so I could see those closing more often.

Like I said I have never seen the boats at BW/BC close other than during CV-19. That doesn't mean they never close as other have said they have experienced them being closed. Maybe because we usually go in January/February we don't experience the thunderstorms that are around at other times of the year.

This past winter, we were on board an Epcot-HS Friendship boat when there was a light rain and a report of lightning in the distance. They docked at YC/BC and required all of us to disembark just as it started to downpour. We (with a toddler and a stroller infant) hurried down the long dock and long sidewalks to the BC, completely drenched by the time we got there. There was a stack of small towels just inside the door so they anticipated this.

Yes, they do stop running those large, covered boats when there's a risk of lightning strike, same as the smaller boats and the Skyliner.

I don’t think adding the App to monitor transportation would work as effortlessly as suggested.
I have been at the POP first in line because it looked like the SkyLiner was running after a storm but in reality It has to wait for the weather report updates and then recycle the entire route before getting the OK to open .
I don’t know how that can be streamlined so easily by any tech solution. Probably the best response is to monitor the weather/ radar services yourself and make the decision that is closest or most convenient or safest.

They would just post which forms are actively loading new riders. It can be a pain to walk all the way to the Skyliner to find out that it’s down. Especially at epcot where the bus stop is on the opposite end of the park.

I agree I have experienced many delays with Disney transport over many years.
I doubt the solution is that easy but I wish it was “applicable”.

I guess we have just been lucky. In the past 22 years we have never experience the Friendship boats not running. Sorry you had to experience that. I'm not sure if you know but you could have gone straight to YC and walked under the covered walkway to the BC that way you wouldn't have to get quite so wet.

Wait...the Skyliner beat the monorail as the best form of transportation in a totally scientific and objective poll:
https://www.disboards.com/threads/t...which-is-better-monorail-or-skyliner.3883869/

Considering it's so good, I can't imagine you would need a backup plan for "if the skyliner isn't working"! :p

And when the monorail is down? Happened this week because of lightning......

Grand Flordian has by far the worst transportation.

Want to go to MK? Sure you have a really long walk (fine in winter terrible in summer) but the other night the walking path was closed after fireworks for 40 mins.

Then to get to Epcot you are forced to walk 3/4 of mile to TTC or ride basically the full loop to then walk down+up ramp, to finally get on another monorail.

Finally VGF (most expensive DVC) is the 2nd stop of a bus trip to other locations. Meaning at prime times busses can be fuller.

Much prefer Riviera only thing they need to fix is have a Boardwalk or Beach Club to Riviera bus along with better status updates on the Skyliner (push notification when it goes down and starts back up)

I completely agree about VGF. We got stuck there last month after the monorails went down due to a storm. Felt completely trapped with only buses as transportation and completely crowded being the second stop.

Do you know why? Haven't run into this so far.

Easy the person who makes the call on the Skyliner being open or closed submits it to the system to report.

The system then takes care of the rest as far as what the alternative routes are.

Same with temporary busses being shown in app on timing.

Most everything can be solved with tech if they just spent some money. Thing is they half solved things instead of fully solving them.

Another thing is bus tracking. They should show you the next bus on a GPS map as opposed to just a time. Companies like Amazon, InstaCart, Uber, lyft already do it and they are all over the US not in a confined area.

Cleaning up fireworks debris it has to be cleared by safety crew to make sure likely no fireworks were live or there was anything smoldering I guess.

Worst part is part of my biggest complaint this trip. Disney forces half done tech on you. There is no way to know that both the boats and walking path was closed.

We could either wait, get a monorail which is way backed up, or walk back to the bus area we just left.

Prior to that being at WL for dinner we had no idea the boat was shut down until we got back to the dock.

This was 7/3 or 7/4 correct? Boat and path closures aren’t normal protocol for regular fireworks, but are for the special July 3/4 and 12/30/31 shows which utilize the additional Seven Seas Lagoon launch points.

I always cringe a bit when I see people waiting for boats after those special shows - seems to take forever to get the all clear and get going again.

The beauty of Disney is they put all the transportation options on the app, never update it, and make it so you are fully lost instead of in the loop.

Last night they moved a scooter by the carosel inside the castle (which you can't get in without a reservation) when closing down for fireworks at like 8:30.

It took a nice CM and persistence before they believed us that it absolutely was not moved to the stroller area of the carosel.

Things like movable signs, notifications in the app, notifications on the app map, and notifications of closures would be helpful.
