Honest question. I have never really known. The other day there was a political thread closed and the Mod said "Enough political arguing. Closed" Not a direct quote as I cant even remember exactly what thread it was. But there are a couple right now that are pretty nasty...and I was just curious as to what the guidelines are on this? I imagine it's hard to write in stone as you never know exactly what kind of craziness will start on any given thread.

Personally I don't feel that they ever should be closed, but this isn't my board so I don't get to make those decisions.

I question this too.

The official answer is that it is closed when it violates board posting rules.

I think its when the mods get tired of the back and forth, as in politics, there IS no end to the arguing...errr DISCUSSION!

then again, this is the DIS, THE DISNEY DISCUSSION BOARD. IF you wanted to talk at length about politics, why not seek out a political based discussion board? You would probably even be able to find a thread that agrees with whatever view you happen to have on a given subject.

RUM?

I guess that some threads are closed because someones feelings have been hurt and instead of backing away or letting it go, the poster decides to notify the mods.

A thread is closed when you disagree with someone or when what you say on a PUBLIC board upsets a certain clique, they insult YOU and you hint that it's a public board and not everyone has to agree or have the same opinion but rudeness does not serve any purpose...........(that's MY experience anyway)

ding, ding, ding, we have a winner

IMO...

When people start name-calling. Discussing a subject is one thing. I'm all for discussion of whatever concept. Say what you please. I like that the DIS allows discussion of political crap, gay rights, religious and even race stuff and doesn't censor ideas. Makes things interesting.

But when people start with the, "Well, you're stupid" or "You're a pee-pee head" kind of stuff, it is just silly and time to shut it down. If you want to name-call, go to a board full of Kindergarteners.

There are "specific rules" when you sign up to be a part of this board, and I think if a thread/post/what ever breaks those rules, the mod's must do their job and close it down. There are a lot of people who think it gets closed "for the wrong reasons"...but rules are rules I guess.

here are a few of the ones posted here, just so people can understand...

NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

(I assume the "infraction" can also mean closing down a thread???)

8. MODERATORS: The DIS has a wonderful group of Moderators who have volunteered to assist our visitors and monitor the boards. Part of their responsibilities is ensuring that our guidelines are followed which may require that a thread is edited, deleted, closed or moved. If these decisions impact you, we ask that you respect them.

12. INFRACTIONS: The DIS guidelines are an important part in keeping the site family friendly. While the majority of our visitors abide by our rules, there are times when problems develop. In order to handle these issues consistently and fairly, we have developed an infraction system.

-I, personally, think that the infractions should be done more, then- maybe a lot more threads would remain open...but I don't run this board, and because i want to keep enjoying this board, I'd like to stick to the rules...be respectful, no nasty language, keep it family friendly, and don't be rude! Disagreements are one thing, but people can disagree and still be respectful!

OH NO! I'm in trouble then.
