When picking up rental car, what if gas isn't full?

Inspired by reading a recent thread, it reminded me of an irritation of mine. Picking up a rental car and having the gas tank not read quite full. Is there anything I should expect of the rental agency?

That thread mentioned having it noted on my contract. What would this do?

Do they have the means to "top off" fuel on site?

You would have them mention it on the contract. When you return it you bring it back at the same level.

I wish they would enforce showing your gas receipt when you return the car.

Ok, maybe this is just me being stupid. But would they write on my contract "not quite full" or something similar and then I would bring it back the same. I'm not trying to be a PITA, just wondering how they will determine if what I bring it back at is the same as what I checked it out at.

Don't just write it yourself...have the rental car person write it too and then take a digital photo of the tank gauge.

They would probably record it as 7/8 of a tank. If you notice it after the fact you will have a tough time with it.

Good point. You must have them document that the tank isn't full. Most lot attendants when you leave will ask you if the tank is full before you drive off.

This happened to us last Feb- we filled up the car at the Hess station near DD - got on The Greenway Highway, and somehow when we arrived at the airport rental parking, the tank registered less than the full line. When they tried to charge me more, I pulled out the gas receipt to show that it had been filled. The charge was removed. Having your gas receipt handy could be valuable.

This happened to us in the spring and I brought it to their attention before we left, they made a note on the contract about how full the tank was.

My Enterprise rental had only a 1/4 of a tank this past weekend.

In one of the boxes on the rental agreemant is a list going from 1/8 to full in 1/8 increments. They said I just had to return it around the 1/4 mark .
