When OK is not OK

So, tell me, how long have you had an opinion of the Betsy Ross flag? Always? Or just sent Kaepernick decided it was something to be offended by? If you have to be TOLD to be offended, you really shouldn't be offended.
I actually somehow missed this controversy entirely until it was posted in here. Not sure where you got that I was offended by the flag. My only opinion is that it's interesting to call it a flag representing freedom when it was created while people owned slaves.

For goodness sakes people, why are you posting pictures of the hand gesture before it was "taken over" by white supremacists to support your argument? Back then it didn't have the meaning that it does now. Sadly, things have changed and it's not so innocent anymore.
They aren't even posting correct pictures. :rotfl:If they would have googled, they'd know that. ;)

And, they keep posting the actual, perfectly fine and acceptable, ok sign with fingers pointed up.

Its sad that people with agendas hijack a perfectly acceptable symbol or like the Betsy Ross flag...which has always been a symbol of American individualism...and freedom.
Yet. Kaepernick thought it was some how racist/ Thankfully, folks dont agree with that except for a very irrelevant minority. Same with the "ok" symbol. Finally folks are starting to stand up to idiotic political correctness and that hasn't been done much before. Folks are saying enough is enough.
The most intolerant people in the world are the ones crying tolerance. Agree with them or you are a racist..etc. Free speech only exists if you agree with their agenda. Folks that cry racism are the first to see race first and not character or content.

And the biggest snowflakes are the ones bemoaning snowflakes.

I have told you twice, at least. I DID google. And NONE of the articles that came up said one word about it being upside down or right side up. Every one talks about it either way. AND show it either way.

'I can't believe you people want everyone to be tolerant of other races, religions, and sexual orientation but won't tolerate bigotry and hatred! Hypocrites! You should be tolerant of my intolerance!'

A flag that was created during an era of slavery represents...freedom? hmm. I'm not saying it's a racist flag, but saying it represents freedom is certainly interesting.

The rest of that is just a Fox News word salad thrown together and not worth a reply.
110% so incorrect it isn’t funny. The Betsy Ross flag was the one if the first flags of the United States. Known also as the republic in 1777. The United States or the Union also defeated the Confederacy in the civil war. The flag represented almost 100 years prior to the civil war freedom. It was the United States soldiers that defeated the south. Which of course ended slavery. Unless you are Colin. So to somehow associate the flag with slavery. Is not just dumb. It’s uneducated.
I’m also a Cincinnati Reds fan. Does that mean I support the bloods or red communism? It’s all just stupid.
We live in a nation and time when no one had it easier. Yet folks want to find things to complain about due to no real drama in their lives.

Nah, what I said was 100% correct. I don't need a civil war lesson because I said nothing about that. I didn't even associate slavery with the flag, that's just what you projected on to me. The flag was created while slavery existed, that's the only statement I made, and it's a fact, so I'm actually 110% correct and it is funny.

Only in a Monty Python way.....

Please watch the video. Gru is not playing the circle game with the children. And the toddler has his pointer finger extended, so it's more of a point than the OK sign. In any case, the toddler is a red herring even if he's copying Gru's OK sign.

Thanks for the video.

It's quite obvious whoever is in the Gru costume did it on purpose.

I still hate to think he did as a sign of white supremacy - especially on a child. But I also realize I can be naive. I just find the whole thing sad.

Again, I know NOTHING about the minions & the related characters, but I have a friend on Facebook who is saying this kinda thing would be common for Gru & "okay" is one of Gru's signature phrases? Again, I don't know. Our daughter has banned the minions in our house - she canNOT stand them! LOL!

Some characters do have signature things they do for poses - like how Peter Pan stands or how Gaston flexes.

However, now that I'm really considering it, I would think if this is a common thing for Gru, there would be more pictures of other Grus w/ other people posing w/ their hands in this manner. And, if it *were* a common thing, Universal would have said something to that effect, & they didn't. They could have said something like "Gru is a known prankster & everything is always 'Oooookay' with Gru. But, going forward, as we are now aware of possible underlying meanings to the "okay" sign, our characters will take better care to be respectful to all of our guests. We regret this happened, & we are updating our training.... blah, blah, blah..." But they didn't.

Possibly they knew something about the guy in the Gru costume & that the "okay" sign isn't a usual thing for Gru & that this guy was meaning something not nice... Again, I don't know...

As others have said, once we know, we strive to do better.

I'm still confused though if an "okay" sign w/ the fingers pointed up, in the right context, is okay - because while some people are saying it's fine, I've read in other places that it's not.

For me, personally, I'm going to be way more conscious of who's around if I ever decide to make an "okay" sign, but, honestly, I can't think of that many times that I do make an "okay" sign.

And I still hate that we've given some fringe hate group so much power. I don't know why we can't just say to the group "Y'all are hateful idiots" & carry on w/ our lives & ignore their little games because, in many instances, giving them so much attention & importance is exactly what they crave.

I don’t have any comments on the original topic of this thread. I only opened this thread because I found the title intriguing and I was curious what it might be about.

Anyway, it reminded of an article I recently read that was linked in another thread here on the Dis about the first guest to ever buy a ticket at Disneyland. For anyone interested, I will include links to the article as well as the Dis thread I was reading before coming here.

So did snowflakes make up that slavery existed? My history teacher way back in middle school must have been one of those pesky snowflakes.
No but anything invented or made during that era could be racist? That's insane. And you tied that together...
also,A person of color today has no more connection to slavery as this white guy from Ohio..that ancestors fought to free the slaves....yet since the union army was around during slavery...it too is racist? Im Irish, but i have no connection to the IRA? Just as no white person today or black person has a connection to slavery...unless of course you are colin
There was slavery...the US ended it. The confederacy was succession....There is nothing connecting the US to slavery....only a succeeded state of states. The Confederacy.

I didn't though, you just wanted to believe that I did and projected it onto me.

Do you believe that when slavery ended racism ended?
