when it's so cold...

See I was born in northern WI in 1970. We had -40 then. Winter lasted all winter. It's making a comeback!

I am slightly older than you are and spent my childhood in Minneapolis and a tiny town in northern WI. I never EVER remember a day off from school for the cold. Too much snow or freezing rain? Yes. But never for just the cold. I'm just amazed so many schools are closed tomorrow!

How the heck do you know your older than me? We had at our grade school a huge mountain built for "sledding days" and we also had a skating rink for another day? I mean for our recess. Something these days I don't know exist?

You said you were born in 1970 and I was born in 1969 -- hence the 'I am slightly older' comment. I was just trying to say that I grew up in the same part of the country around the same time. And I remember how cold it got too. :flower3:

Sorry didn't catch that. But, our grade school built a huge man made hill every winter. And the grades would take given days on the hill. It was a big hill for sledding. Then we also would have a real skating rink also for certain days. I mean when I think back then, compared to now at schools. We really had it made.

When it's so cold that you breath in and your lungs BURN, you know that it can't be good to be outside...MAN, will it ever get warm again? I've had people say "well, you chose to live there..." but really, is it any better anywhere else. We lived on the east cost (south) for many years and put up with horrible hurricanes, my brother lost his home in a mudslide in Nevada, I have a friend who lives in CA that is deathly afraid of earthquakes (rightfully so, she's been through 2 bad ones in her life!!!) and in other areas, there are really bad tornados at times durring the year...so really? We just have to think "what would we rather put up with?"

I just thought I'd offer my 2 cents...we can't live where it gets too hot in the summer, because of my daughters heat/humid problems (believe me we've tried)...Is there that "perfect" location? Someplace with out snow, with out 20 BELOW BEFORE the windchill knocks it down to 50 or 60 below? Is there someplace that doesn't have earthquakes, tornados in the summer, hurricanes? TELL ME, I'd like to know where, because I'd love to move there!

I'd like to know too. My DH keeps naming places and in my opinion, EVERY place has it's downfalls:confused3 .

But Hawaii does look niiiiiice........:cloud9:

It's a cold one, that's for sure.

But I do love my town, I just wish I could pick it up and move it somewhere warm.

My son's school is closed today because of the cold. It is -25º, with a wind-chill of -42º

DH and I jog in this weather for an hour everyday outside unless it's raining(then we go on our side by side treadmillls:lovestruc ).

If it's freezing cold we are out there together running about the Cape. I wear ear muffs and a head sock that covers my mouth and nose otherwise I start coughing and end up weezing by the time our job is up. It's not good to breath in this cold winter air even if your just going from your house to your car.

I said the same thing when my son's school was cencelled today - I NEVER got school called off b/c of cold! And that was back on the old windchill table! They said this morning that -27 NOW used to be -50. Whatever ;)

I love where I live April - Mid November. I GUESS I can handled being miserable December - March to get those glorious seasons!!

(And no snakes, huge spiders, gators, etc.)! I am more scared of wildlife than natural disasters...

We are at -19 air temp right now :scared1:

I just got home from dropping off DD at school and the guy on the radio said there is a place in Alaska that is almost 80 degrees warmer than us at the moment  That is just wrong!

Yeah, we're -28 right now!!! That's BEFORE the windchill brings us down to -60 or so...at what point does it NOT MATTER anymore? I mean what's the actual difference between -15 and -28 before windchill?

I've enjoyed reading some of your "we have the best weather" thoughts...I CRINGED when someone mentioned Oregon...My hubby had a job interview in Klammath Falls, OR and we flew into Medford...IT WAS NOT FOR US!!!!!! It snowed one day and it just happened to be the day that we drove back to Medford from the K.F. to get back on the plane and it took TWICE as long to get there through the mountains...oh, I just cringe to think of being there...

We hated Iowa because although it doesn't get as cold there, every winter it was PURE ICE! If we're going to live where winter occurs, we'd better get to have some fun in the snow, and not just slide around on the ice!

We lived in North and South Carolina and we LOVED IT there...but my daughter was miserable. We spent 3-4 months in the summer just in the house. My 4 year old has a heat intollerance problem. Anything over 85 or so, and we're in the house or at the pool...

We lived in CA for 6 months, and although it was beautiful with nice weather- there just happened to be an earthquake where there was actually damage to our home- we had cracks in the walls.

So, I think that even though it SUCKS to have this horrible cold for weeks on end here, at least the cold doesn't damage our home, or hurt us- because we can always just choose to stay inside...It really does stink though when there are several days of -10 (or even more) BEFORE the wind chill is factored in! I love to hear others be mad about it "not getting over 30 degrees for the day"...it cracks me up.

I'm in Chicago and I complain about the cold every winter, but like someone else said, my whole family lives here and I don't think I could ever move

No matter where you live, there will be something to complain about so you might as well make the best of where you are

I could never leave my family, or else I'd be in Florida right now.

Honestly though, I'd take the cold and ice any day over hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes. A tornado is my worst fear.

In Cedar Rapids this morning, a new record low was set, -24 degrees. Wind chill was -50.

How cold is that? Well, to put it in perspective, it is COLDER than both the North Pole (a balmy 37!), and the South Pole (-18)!!!!

Iowa gets ice, but also snow. In fact, 9 inches of snow from Monday to Wednesday morning this week. The piles that have been plowed from parking lots are about 8 feet tall!!

It's so cold my car won't start :headache:.

I took this picture this morning:

Ahhh...OP, I feel your pain. ::yes::

DH & I have lived in New England our whole life. Me from MA. and DH from CT. Last winter '07/'08 was bad but I am hearing this winter is even worst than last year. :cold: DH received a fabulous offer to head to Southern Ca for a 5+ years engineering project. We jumped at it. The weather here in the OC is absolutely amazing. DH came in May and I joined him in July. I spent the summer here and there is NO humidity. I flew out of Boston July 1st in heat and humidity that was horrific only to arrive here and fall madly in love!!! I speak with family daily back home and this winter with the bone chilling temps and the constant snow storms is just not stopping. :headache:

And like other posters have mentioned earthquakes....sure but they are not daily like WINTER is!!!

Sending some 80+ degree weather from sunny So Cal everyone's way.=)

:wave2: eduk8r26, another fabulous day in the OC!!! :sunny:

I understand that earthquakes aren't daily, but I do believe they do more damage when they come. Sure, tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes don't happen for 3 months straight, but the destruction of them lasts for many months-years!
I think that living here gives my family the "appreciation" when we go to Disney that some others don't get..we appreciate the warm Jan/Feb. climate when people down there think it's cold, we're ready to run around in bikinies!

I live in NY, so not as cold as some of you people get, but right now, there is a windchill of 5, but I don't feel like it's any colder than when it is 20 or 30. Maybe when it gets to -60, you feel it. But we got snow this morning, and of course, my town decides they don't need to salt or plow the roads, so it was a slippery drive to class. And once i got to school, realized the parking lot wasn't plowed either, so I just put my car somewhere, hoping it was a spot. After class, walking back to my car, I almost get hit by a car that skid in the parking lot and lost control, I ran/slipped out of the way fortunately, because the stupid school wouldn't plow the lot.
