to rent a car for your trip?

We are going June 2013 and I have been looking at rental prices (which are ridiculous).

When is the best time to rent to get the best rate?

I'll make a resi for a price I can live with 6 months out, usually in the $35 a day range for a compact. Then 6 weeks to a month out I start looking. The last 3 times renting from Alamo at MCO (look up and join thier insiders club - its free) we paid less then $20 a day for a full size.

I would keep looking and make sure you're not selecting a non-refundable option. Then if something better comes up, change the reservation.

I'll make a reservation 2-3 months out and then keep checking for better rates and rebook. I find the rates get better the closer you get to our travel dates when coupon codes become available. For our May trip, I started out with $250ish and ended up paying $97 for a full sized car.

I am also renting in June, and have already booked a car. This is through National, I belong to their program. The good thing are... I don't have to pay anything now. If a better price comes up, I can modify for that... and I'm guaranteed to have a reservation.

I would book now and then modify or cancel as you get better deals.

ETA: Paying $44.50/day for a Standard car. I'm doing two "one-way" rentals.

That time was through Alamo. We signed up for their members program and got codes from Mousesavers.com. They have a whole page dedicated to car rental coupon and member codes. You need to check for your rental dates as some coupons expire and have length of rental requirements.
