When is the best time to book a flight?

Will the prices be lower if I wait until closer to the date? I'm also wondering if it will decrease my chances of getting my flight changed. Or should we just book now? (going early Dec.)

Not trying to be flip, but the best time is when you find a good price. Airlines are constantly adjusting their seat availability and pricing - several times a day. So, start watching prices for your trip and when you see a good one, jump on it.

I seem to remember that there was a time frame every week where you might be able to get some lower than normal fares. Was it Tuesday at midnight where the airline was headquartered or was it Wednesday?

I cannot remember, nor do I know if this is still common practice.

Your later observation was right -- everything varies, there's no one right time. As to your question, will waiting until closer to your flight decrease your chances of a flight change? Well, that's pretty much a mathematical certainty. The more time there is, the more time there is for a change to be made, KWIM?

I would definately book as soon as you find a price you are comfortable paying. The same flights I paid $720 for (4 r/t) are now up to $1400 (this is for mid-Dec).

For our last Dec. trip I found the best prices in Aug for Dec. travel. After Aug they went up a lot.
