We went on the Sovereign of the Seas (built 1988) about 3 years ago, and it was a piece of garbage. I think the rust was actually holding the ship together. It made us turn back to the DCL, even for the extra money. I think the Sovereign of the Seas is no longer sailing - being about 20 years old.
Still cruising, RCCL sold it and it is just the Sovereign now. It looked great when we saw it in 2004 docked next the the Magic. If you get a chance read some of the reviews, most folks who have sailed her really rave about what a great ship she is.
I remember it well. The same storm that broke the moorings, came thru my work area, earlier that day on its way to the coast. It dropped a lot of power lines and tree limbs and made a mess of the area. Ihave some video of it somewhere that I took from the cab of the truck I was on.
for the US market, a cruise ship is retired long b4 it is materaily unusable and they get transfered/sold to other markets...Asia/Europe ... usually.
On the other hand NCL transfered some hulls from the Asia market to the US market .... and pas' wondered "why are the ceilings lower?"
At one time a ships life was 30+++ but that was the time b4 computers and complex engineering. If you built a ship, you built it to last forever
Today a ship builder asks at price bid time "how long do you want it to last?" and can build to that date almost to the MINUTE !
The DCL//CC issue had nothing to do with age or mechanical failure IMO. That was a bad decision .... period. No one got hurt so be thankful. But the ships USUALLY back in for a reason.
My opinion?
No, not really.
That's what a DCL ship Master shared with me one night when we sat and discussed ship handling.

My best upgrade was on the Soveriegn pf the Seas, went from an inside cheapie to the top deck largest outside cabin. Before she was retrofitted with small balconies. One deck away from the pool bar. Sweet!
