Here in NC, we are mandated start Aug. 25 and release June 10. This is because Senate Pro Tem Basnight (Dare County) pretty much wants it that way and the "save our summers" folks have given him lots of, um, funding to keep it that way (and earlier school start hurts his private business). Now, our mountain counties can apply for a waiver for an earlier start time due to the snow factor, but the rest of us are screwed. When we had a "real" calendar (read: no state involvement), we began on Aug. 6 and released on/around May 20-25, depending on weather.
