When does Detroit Airport Open?

Ok I'm not sure about this one.

I was wondering what time the Detroit airport opened. Our flight leaves at 5:55am and I don't want to get there 2 hours early if they airport doesn't even open until 4am. (we are leaving out of the north terminal)

I also want to know if we should get food before we get to the airport or if there will be places open to eat!

I have sent the airport a question through their website but also wanted to ask about experiences here!

I've flown out of Detroit for early morning flights and never seen them "not open." I would still get there plenty early because security lines can get quite long even for early flights.

I can't comment on the food because I haven't flown out of the new North Terminal yet. The Smith Terminal had horrible "dining" choices but I'm sure the new terminal is better but wouldn't count on them being open that early. I'd pack a snack or eat before I left.

Have a great flight!

I am very happy that the Smith Terminal is gone!!!

I did see the north terminal has several coffee places, Wendy's, and a McDonalds

This will be our first time out of the North Terminal and I hope to be impressed!

This is also the earliest flight we have ever taken! We are staying the night at a hotel close, I plan to do a sleep park fly package. Do you know of what options there are near the airport in the morning? Knowing us we'll get a pizza the night before and just have leftovers for breakfast! Nothing like grease right before you fly!

I'm not sure what time the other restaurants open, but National Coney Island opens at 5:00 AM. They put together a decent diner-style breakfast. The Earl of Sandwich is also open at 5:00, so it looks like that might be the opening time for most places. I haven't had breakfast from the Earl at either North Terminal or Downtown Disney, but I've been meaning to for a while. If it's anything like their lunch/dinner sandwiches, it's got to be great. The airport itself is open 24 hours, but be prepared for a longer line at security at that time. They get a lot of business travel in the early morning.

I don't know if you booked a room yet, but we used the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Merriman. I think our room was about $130 for the night (it was a suite, the standard room was about $100 for the same) and it included 8 nights of parking at the QuikPark lot. The parking lot is right behind the hotel. We left our car in the hotel lot overnight and then drove into the QuikPark lot in the morning. They tell you what area you must park in and a shuttle follows you to your parking space. They help you unload/load your luggage and you're on your way. It took a total of about 15 minutes to park the car, get on the shuttle and ride to the terminal. :car:

Also, we ordered pizza from Leonardo's (?) and they delivered it to the hotel. I am not 100% sure that is the correct name, but it is the only Italian pizza delivery restaurant that they have menus for in the lobby:) . It was very good pizza and our room had a refrigerator to keep our leftovers. There is no microwave but there is a free continental breakfast in the morning (too late for you though) which utilizes a microwave in the lobby. I imagine you could heat up leftovers in that and even eat in the little breakfast room.

Kristenrice- Thank you for the suggestion! Did you have to book a special package through the Fairfield Inn or did you just ask for it?

Does anyone else have any suggestions for hotels that offer parking?

I got a reply back from the Detroit Airport to the question I asked.
Raymond Albert answered my question as follows

"Hi Nicole, at the North terminal they do have a security line that is
open 24 hours a day, but the Airlines usually arrive between 4-4:30am.
McDonalds and Le Petit Bistro open at 4:30am and the majority of other
restaurants open at 5am. Have a nice flight."

I'm happy to have an answer and know that I'll be able to get food if needed! (My DH can be CRANKY if he doesn't eat!).

If you go to marriott.com and input "DTW" for your search, you'll get a list of hotels in the Detroit Metro area. If it is giving you hotels IN Detroit, try entering "Romulus, MI" for your search. Just find the listing for the Fairfield Inn and Suites. There are 3 Marriott branded hotels within 3 miles of the Detroit Metro Airport. I don't know how many of them offer the park and fly rate. When you enter your dates, do not specify any discounts (AAA, Senior, etc) since that will not include any park and fly rates. The rate options will come up and you want to look for the ones that say something like "Escape! Park Here Fly There" package. It is usually about $10 more than the base rate for the same room.

Here is a link to the SpringHill Inn and Suites, also by Marriott. It is right next door to the Fairfield Inn, it's rates appear to be the same, and these rooms HAVE a microwave! They also offer a park and fly rate. This hotel just opened in 2008 so we haven't tried it yet.

The LaQuinta Inn is on the other side of the driveway as the Fairfield Inn and I think they also offer a park and fly rate. I use the Marriott's because I can redeem MyPoints for Marriott gift cards.

If you go to quikpark.com, there is a coupon for a free night if you decide not to get a park n fly package. The parking at QuikPark is $10/night so the park n fly package is a great deal. You get 8 nights of parking for $10!

Kristen,

Thank you so much for all of the advice! I'm looking into my options now!
