As usual, MA is all over the place!
Our town (just north of Boston) always starts school the Tuesday before Labor Day no matter when Labor Day is. All levels of school have the same start day. The kids do 3 days of school the first week then 4 days then 5... It is a nice way to ease the kids and the parents back into the school routine. Plus we get a 4 day weekend for Labor Day which is a nice way to end the summer. This coming year is the latest I think DD12 has ever started school. It stinks when they start in August but we do usually end up with a nice mid June end date every year, even with some snow days.
Yes, here in MA, the school calendars are decided by school committees, not by county or by the state, so you definitely do get quite a variety. Some communities consistently start before labor day and have been doing so for about 20 years. Others always start after labor day.
Then there are towns like mine where the calendar varies. We used to start after labor day, then we switched to before but were getting out so early in June that last year we started after. Then we ended up with 10 snow days and the National Guard in town. So, now it's back to before Labor Day again., but Labor Day is so late that the kids still don't start until Sept. The kids will also have 3 days, then 4, then 5, like your kids which I agree is a nice way to ease in.
