When do your kids start school in 2015?

As usual, MA is all over the place! :confused3

Our town (just north of Boston) always starts school the Tuesday before Labor Day no matter when Labor Day is. All levels of school have the same start day. The kids do 3 days of school the first week then 4 days then 5... It is a nice way to ease the kids and the parents back into the school routine. Plus we get a 4 day weekend for Labor Day which is a nice way to end the summer. This coming year is the latest I think DD12 has ever started school. It stinks when they start in August but we do usually end up with a nice mid June end date every year, even with some snow days.

Yes, here in MA, the school calendars are decided by school committees, not by county or by the state, so you definitely do get quite a variety. Some communities consistently start before labor day and have been doing so for about 20 years. Others always start after labor day.
Then there are towns like mine where the calendar varies. We used to start after labor day, then we switched to before but were getting out so early in June that last year we started after. Then we ended up with 10 snow days and the National Guard in town. So, now it's back to before Labor Day again., but Labor Day is so late that the kids still don't start until Sept. The kids will also have 3 days, then 4, then 5, like your kids which I agree is a nice way to ease in. :thumbsup2

Southern AR, Students report Aug 17th, Teachers go back Aug 10. We should get out May 26th, depending on snow days.

How many snow days do you normally have in a given year? I find it interesting because we get a lot of snow (Ottawa, Canada) every year and it's blustery cold but there are never make up days at the end of the year. While our school board may cancel buses, the schools remain open and parents often drive their kids in and as luck would have it for my crew, we live within walking distance so they still attend school on bus cancellation days.

We normally get one or two snow days any given year. Last year was really strange cause we missed close to 6 days. We are in vary far southern Arkansas so getting snow is not typical. We usually get ice, which is awful. We had several days this year where many people in town were without power because of freezing rain. We still got out at the same time this past year because they just added an extra hour to our day for 6 weeks. It was awful for all the spring sports and after school activities.

Near Madison, Wisconsin. School is back September 1 I believe. But usually school starts after Labor Day.

Oh, I can imagine how inconvenient that would be and what a long day for the kids as well.

Our schedule builds in 5 snow days. If they're not used the kids get out a week earlier than planned.

Southern Jersey shore area here. Kids go back 9/8. It warms my heart to see all of these August dates because we booked WDW for 8/30-9/5 hoping for lower crowd levels since Labor Day is late this here. We normally go during jersey week but wanted to try something different this year. I'm sure it will be scorching but hopefully crowd levels will be less!

They did the same to our county schools two years ago and then left it that way. The elementary school starts at 8:50 am and last until 3:57 pm.

We always used to do this (I'm South Shore), and I liked the ramp-up too. Then last year they went to after Labor Day - so we're Sept. 8th this year. It actually works out well for us this year, but generally I'd prefer an earlier start, earlier end.

That is an awfully long day. We go alot earlier we start at 7:55 and are out by 3:15. I wish we started later. I think it would help everyone. I'm not a morning person so getting my DD dropped off and making it to my school on time is crazy.

Our state has set times for when school starts. We mostly start around the same week. They deem that we all have the same spring break. The real difference is when we get out at the end of the year. I wish we would go year round so we could go to Disney in the Middle of the year DH and I both teach, so taking off is hard.

We are at a charter so they set their own calendar. This year we start August 17th. I think most school systems around here (Raleigh/Durham NC) start the following Monday, August 24th.

There is a very strong initiative right now for our town to start school later. Currently middle school has to be there 7:40am and gets out at 2:05. I think an 8:30 start is perfect and hope they change it but many parents are not in favor because they drop their kids off at school on their way to work. Our town does not have school bus routes nor is there public transportation that is convenient to get to the schools. The kids either walk or get a ride. We live about a 30 minute walk from the school so if DD were to walk, she would have to leave by 7 which would mean getting up by 6/6:15 which I think is way too early for a 12 year old to have to get up every day. I carpool with another family and do drop off 2-3 days per week.

We are a very small district so we do not have staggered start times. We do have a large rural area that our buses cover. They start routes at 6:30. Could you imagine having your Kindergarten child at a bus stop in the winter when it is still dark out. I know that we have also had several bus drivers have to double back to different schools because the students fall back to sleep on the bus and don't get dropped off.
