When do you pay for excursions?

It's been a couple years since our last DCL cruise. I'm looking into travel insurance and trying to come up with a trip cost. I'm trying to figure out if I should include the (estimated, at this point) cost of excursions and I don't remember exactly how it works. If you somehow miss your cruise last minute, are you still on the hook for excursion costs?

They don't get charged to your account until you do them. However, they must be canceled three days before the start of your cruise ( not the date of the excursion). If not canceled, you will be charged. I don't know what happens if you are a no-show.

They charge on board. Each excursion has it's own cancellation rules. Best to include them in the insurance just in case they still have it but the excursion ends up being less than you expect due to changes etc.

Okay. That's kind of what I thought, but I wasn't sure if I was remembering correctly.
We're on a port intensive cruise, so it would definitely be wise to include coverage for excursions.
Thanks!
