My son is almost the same. He is 12 in 7th grade. He is unbelievably smart as well. He was reading at a 5th grade level when he was in Kindergarten! But he is also socially immature. He has HIGH anxiety and is always anxious about everything. :scared1: I know how you feel. I know he is a great person and I want everyone to see it too, it just breaks my heart. :sad1:

Sounds just like my son. The hardest part is not being able to do anything about it. This is something he needs to figure out on his own.

I am proud to say I weighed in at WW and was only up......

+ .4!!!!

After eating:

Carbones Pizza (pepperoni and green olive thank you)
Pecan Pie for my birthday (from Betty's Pies Sheree)
Chicken wings
Khans mongolian BBQ
A huge burger and a few fries
Some pop! (I had a headache and usually caffeine helps but not usually one thing I drink ever.)
Tobies Doughnuts (1/3 of an apple fritter and a maple Long John)
Subway
etc. etc....

I was really worried. I just went out of town with the attitude it was a weekend to splurge and knew I would walk a lot to try and earn some activity points.

We had packed a cooler of fruit and had that for snacks so it helped. I have decided to go with the mindset that what I do daily is what matters and there will be a few times a year that eating out, food splurges etc...will happen and as long as I account for them than I will be fine. No guilt and move on. This is for the long haul and I will never be perfect.

I need to take Baylor to football so I will be back later on with the tally's!!:cool1:

Not bad at all! I even snuck a doughnut myself this weekend. Have any of y'all ever watched the show "Man vs. Food"? This guy goes around the country and eats at all of these places with food challenges (like eat a 7 lb. burrito, or 12 super-hot wings, etc.) But he also profiles local food joints in the towns he visits. My kids LOVE this show. Well he came to Austin once and profiled a place called Round Rock Doughnuts where they have a Texas-sized doughnut which takes up the entire box. The kids kept asking if we could go there on Sunday, so since I was up early I ran over there and picked some up for everyone. I let myself have some of the huge one, and then thought that while it was really good (what doughnut isn't), it was just a doughnut. But it filled me up so much I didn't eat lunch that day.

OH YUMMY!! Two wonderful MN traditions!
Way to go with such a small gain!!
I have been checking and am continuing to gain this week. I'd like to blame TOM, but I think it has more to do with my intake! I have GOT to get moving!!! Especially tonight and the next few days. Tomorrow is my b-day and we are going to the State Fair!!! Dawn knows that means FOOD!! I have to limit my intake and burn some calories!!

:bday: I've heard stories about the Minnesota State Fair and the foods they offer and they sound fantastic, so I can appreciate your dilemma

The company is First Student: not owned by our schools. I gave them an earful. When I called DS's school this morning to let them know since, "I know longer have faith in the bus company," the secretary agreed and told me that they had not been made aware that DS's bus was late.:mad::mad: After my first call to let them know he was late, she started double checking attendance w/ the bus and found there was a missing boy! :eek:Last I knew she couldn't reach his mother so she was assuming the mom went home to get him. I am blessed that I have an understanding boss that will allow me to wait until both kids are safely on the bus... I am not letting the bus company know this. It infuriates me. I am documenting everything. These are children, MY children, and the company's business is to transport them safely in a timely matter. I think I will google the CEO's information and send him a little note. That might make me feel better.

Our kids don't ride busses but I've often wished they had one available for us. When I hear stories like this, though, I wonder if it's better to NOT have them.

Our dinner tonight was Crockpot Chicken Stroganoff..I got the recipe off Spark and it's yummy and super easy! Next time I would actually add more chicken, it makes a ton of sauce..I put in two breasts, and could easily have done 4 and had more leftovers.

1 can reduced fat cream of mushroom soup
1 16 oz container fat free sour cream
1 can mushrooms
1/2 packet of lipton onion soup mix
1 lb boneless/skinless chicken breasts.
Combine everything except the chicken in the bottom of your crockpot, then put the chicken in. Cook on low 6-7 hrs. Serving is about 1/2 of a breast.

I've got a crock pot issue that always stumps me. Whenever I cook boneless, skinless chicken breasts in a crockpot, they always turn out dry and tough. I cook them on low for around 5 hours, less than that they're way too tough and more than that they're way too dry. I've had success with pounding the chicken thin before cooking it, but that take time and when I think crockpot, I think throw the stuff in and go. So what is your secret to perfectly cooked crockpot chicken?

Elizabeth (I must have missed copying your quote) I'm sorry the appointment didn't go well at all. One thing I do know - those hours that your DD is in school are going to FLY by. I always think I'll get so much done once they're back in school, but the days just go so fast and I'm never as productive as I expected to be. :rolleyes1

I need to get my backside in gear and get organized! We're taking a last-minute trip to Houston to see my brother and SIL this weekend so I've got to pack and get ready for that. But I also need to get stuff ready and organized for our Webelos den meeting before I go. I know what I'm going to have the boys doing, I just need to gather all the stuff together. Yep, I'm procrastinating.....

Jane:

If you can't find arrowroot at your local supermarket, try a Chinese food store. You should be able to get it there.

Hope this helps!!

Personal Update:

FINALLY got off my duff last night and did 20 mins on my mini stepper. Besides some light housework, that was the first exercise all week!! Forced myself to do 10 mins before breakfast this morning and another 10 just afterwards. Will likely do a minimum of 10 more before the day is done but I think I'm going to try and stretch myself and go for 20 more. :thumbsup2

I've discovered an unexpected fondness for this particular workout. I hate it towards the end when I've begun to get tired but I feel fantastic after I've finished. It earns more points than walking so I'm going to keep doing it for a while, on top of a 2 mile walk three times a week.

:yay:

Happy Birthday to Sheree :cool1: and what a beautiful day to spend at the fair. It is only going to be a high of 74 at noon today here in MN and 78 at 4 p.m. so that means no baked people and animals while we are all still alive!!! :lmao:

I am so stinkin swamped it is not even funny. Dan and Carsyn are gone so I am the lone driver for Baylor plus the workload is high for me right now and for that I am happy but it is time consuming.

I am thankful for all your recipies and I am trying to figure out my meal tonight. Potluck for Baylor's football team and know there will be hotdogs and chips. I figure I will just plan for that and saty away from cookies, salads or desserts. I will have to eat what I know for chips like Doritos or something.

I know I can eat before and I will to cut the starvation factor but I do not want to be the MOM who is on a "diet" so she will not eat. I can do this, it is just about the planning.

Picking up Carsyn photos today - to busy yesterday to get there.

I am reading you all - am so proud of so many here!!! It makes me smile!!:lovestruc

Susan, not sure if you're looking for chain info, but all the chains..ie Outback, Logan's, O'Charley's, etc have nutrition info on their websites now. If you can't find it, or it's a local joint, at any steak place you should be safe with grilled chicken or sirloin, just watch your portion size... have half the baked potato and no butter/sc..get a salad with low fat dressing. At seafood places again, grilled shrimp is good, broiled/grilled fish (just make sure they don't broil in butter), scallops, etc. Seafood is pretty diet friendly as long as you ask how it's prepared and watch portions. I always just look up before we go, and count everything out. Hope this helps.
Duh, sometimes I miss the obvious like check their websites. :confused3 I'm not real sure where we are going yet. We planned to go to a nearby winery which has a fantastic chef, BUT a walk-in is impossible and when i tried to call and get a reservation I was told they don't do "reservations for two after 6p.m." Can you believe that? Apparently, no romantic dinners there.
Susan (i think that is who asked) - I know Chilli's isn't really a steak place but they do have good steak. I looked up their nutritional info for it when we went the last time and it was pretty healthy. They have a guiltless grill menu and the Sirloin steak with steamed veggies (I think it was broccoli) is
240 cals, 8g fat, 1820mg of sodium (I don't worry about the sodium too much for one meal). Try healthydiningfinder.com and you can put in your location and it will tell you the places that have healthy choices. They have a breakdown of what they classify as healthy. I think the whole meal has to be under 750 cals.
Now that's an awesome website. That might help me figure out where we want to go.
Observations:
2. If the school buses would show up on time for both kids everyday, breakfast and lunch packing would be a snap. Bus was 45min late for DD yesterday and 49min late for DS today.
Oh yes. Last week for DS's middle school orientation the bus was exactly 60 minutes, yes 1 full hour, late picking him up. I called the company and asked why it took four busses to get to my son. There is no excuse for the busses breaking down... especially THREE on the same route. They had all summer to maintenance those stupid things. They assured me that next week (aka NOW) the busses would all be up and running with no delays. :headache:
Okay, THAT is ridiculous. Definitely write those letters.
Getting behind in posting here...had a bad day yesterday (turned out fine, I was making everything worse than it was). Been feeling depressed the past week or two and it's catching up to me.
No exercise today or yesterday...I'm in a funk. Gotta get my butt moving tomorrow.
I have a trip planned to visit DBF in Phoenix over Labor Day weekend. We always eat so badly when we're together because I like to go to all those places that we don't have here (Del Taco, In & Out, Sonic, etc) I'm going to have to make a very conscious decision to NOT do that this time, and go on walks every night. Walking during day will most likely be impossible with the heat there.
Enjoy your trip and take a break from the stress at home. Late evening walks sound VERY romantic. Wouldn't it be nice if you found some smokin' hot shoes that wouldn't kill your feet that you could wear while you walk. :rotfl:
Hi gang,
Saw my neurosurgeon today; what a waste of time that was. Waited literally an hour and forty-five minutes to see him, and only ended up with five minutes of face time with the doc. He had reviewed my case before I came in, and while he agrees that it's most likely not an infection in the disk, is still going to send me for the biopsy just in case. (I think it's mostly a CYA thing for him and the other doc just in case they're wrong.) He again noted that things haven't really changed since I had pre-op xrays taken back in January, which is a good thing. He also mentioned doing a myelogram to see how much pressure the collapsed disk is putting on my nerves, but did he go ahead and order it? Nooo, of course not! So I'll have the biospy done, go back for results, then probably get sent for the myelogram, and come back again for results and hopefully map out a treatment plan, then probably have to come back at least once for whatever the treatment ends up being.
Between the long wait, short face-time, and lack of action, I was quite aggravated when I left and in no mood to go upstairs and weigh in. I'll try to remember to do so whenever I go for my biospy. (They're gonna call me with the date, so I'll keep you all posted.)
That really stinks. I HATE all that "hurry up and wait" cr@p, anyway. But when you are waiting for medical help, that's got to be even worse. I hope they start to get it together and come up with a solution for you.
Good morning all!

We ended up not eating out at the Mexican Restaurant last night for the tennis fundraiser. I decided that I would rather just give cash to the team and not take a chance of eating out of control. With it being so early in my journey to a healthier lifestyle I did not want to sabotage it within the first week of trying to be good. And going out to eat there would have done just that, Mexican is one of my weaknesses. I know with WW that I have 35 extra points to use as needed for stuff like this but I have already decided that I will only use some of those on Friday or Saturday each week, and only if I get some exercising in during the week. Score one for me in my food addiction battle. :cheer2:
Good Job. Sounds like you have a pretty good plan going. I might steal that rule about only using the flex points if I've kept up with my excercise. That will keep me a little more honest about the working out! :thumbsup2

I have to share my weepy woman moment from this AM. It's our 15th anniversary today, and when I came downstairs this AM, there was a small box on the table. I thought DH might have gotten me a decorative wedding band. I've been wearing a simple/cheap/plain band for the last seven years because I lost the diamond out of my engagement ring/wedding band (one of those wraparound rings) seven years ago.
I opened the box and HE HAD MY RING FIXED!!! :lovestruc We checked with several jewelry stores years ago and were told it was unfixable, that the setting was too damaged. Well, he found a small owner/operator jeweler who was able to remove the old setting and put in a new one with a new stone. It's GORGEOUS!!! I am on :cloud9:. I never thought I'd wear my original wedding ring again. :love2: Yep, he's a keeper!!! ::yes::

Tracking for yesterday...

B-fast: none due to the bus fiasco yesterday:mad:
Lunch: small taco salad no sr crm & no guac
Dinner: Pork chop, whole grain ricearoni & peas
Snack: .5 c grapes & chocolate topping only of a sundae cone
Drinks: 3 Diet cokes & 28oz of water

Observations:

1. I increased my water intake by 4oz. I am going to strive for only 2 DCs a day.
2. Due to the bus issue, I was unprepared for lunch and had to eat takeout. I reviewed the menu and tried to make a healthier yet cost effective choice.
3. DD detests chocolate but likes sundae cones. DH or I have to eat the chock topping off! She hasn't realized yet that the cones are lined with it! She calls it C-H!:rotfl:

Jessica – I’m on the hunt for a granola bar recipe (something like a fiber one bar) that is easy to make and lower in calories. If I find something I’ll let you know. If the buses were that late how late were the kids getting to school? I agree a letter to the CEO of the bus company (and maybe the school board as well) will make you feel better and might get the situation noticed.

Please share the recipe if you find one!

I had to call the school again today. Bus was late again but only 17 min. The secretary gave me the name of the Transportation Director for our school district. I am in the middle of drafting a letter to him, both principals and the superintedent. We'll see what this brings.

Jessica- I would say a letter is definitely in order. Our bus system is still run by the school, I have to say, I haven't ever heard good things about a privatized system. They've tried to implement that here a couple of times and enough people said "no way" that it hasn't happened.

It has always been this way since DS started school. I am sure it is supposedly more cost effective for the district. My question to that is how valuable is the time that the children our missing?

Tomorrow is my b-day and we are going to the State Fair!!! Dawn knows that means FOOD!! I have to limit my intake and burn some calories!!

Happy Birthday!:cheer2: I went to the Mn State Fair back in 1991. I was dating someone that worked for Tom Thumb Donuts. I actually flew to Milwaukee and my girlfriend & I drove up and spent the weekend at the campground at the fair. We ate our way thru it! We made sure to separate each "eating" session by some activity: one time that was riding the skyride! In my 20s I could eat like that!

I've heard stories about the Minnesota State Fair and the foods they offer and they sound fantastic, so I can appreciate your dilemma
It is so yummy. Gyros! they were wonderful.

We just had the Illinois State Fair here. I went last Friday with DS & DD. I purposely ate a sandwich before we went. I did help DS with his Elephant Ear but otherwise I "behaved".

Our kids don't ride busses but I've often wished they had one available for us. When I hear stories like this, though, I wonder if it's better to NOT have them.

We could take them in the morning. DH doesn't work very far from either of them. Problem is that they would arrive too early and we would have to pay for before school care for DD. Also, both are magnet schools and not in an area of town I would want DS wasting time in every morning.

I put them in frozen. I have a recipe from the budget board that got me to try it that way and I have never gone back to the shoe leather again.

Good morning, all!

Barb- I threw the chicken breasts in frozen as well, and it worked like a charm, that's prob the secret.

Dawn- Sorry you're so swamped right now. Hopefully the weekend will slow things down for you a bit.

Susan- Very cool anniversary gift, I would have been weepy too!

Jessica- Hoping the bus thing goes better today!

Woohoo, it's Friday! I know two people who are sleeping in tomorrow ;) Good day here yesterday, worked in Piper's classroom in the afternoon sanitizing stuff (if you want it done right;) )it threw our evening schedule off a bit, but we managed. I'm debating whether to walk, I have my cals all burned for the week and I tore up one of my toes walking yesterday- something was rubbing wrong..I ignored it until I got home, took off my shoe and had a bloody sock :rolleyes1 I had just figured I was going to have a blister! Will still walk with Piper tonight though. Hope everyone has a great day!

Note to self (or anyone else who does not like fish): Whole wheat pasta that has omega 3's in it makes the house smell like fish and the pasta has a fishy smell too. For most people that would not be too bad but for me the smell of fish makes me gag. Good thing my SIL was ready to walk as soon as I had dinner ready for the guys. So we left to walk and by the time I got back the house did not smell that bad anymore. But tried to eat it and could not because the pasta itself still smelled like fish. So, reheated leftovers. Another hurdle passed today...usually on Fridays I swing by Starbucks and get my most favorite drink in the whole wide world, Venti Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, yummmmm. As difficult as it was, I drove by it today. Yeah me!! :dance3:

I've never noticed the fishy-ness of whole wheat pasta before :scratchin I've tried it in a few dishes before and we all just didn't really like the texture that much. I made it the other night with just a meat sauce and it wasn't too bad.

Good job passing on the treat! :woohoo:

I wish I could have slept in today! I used to let my kids buy lunch on Fridays, but lately they have asked me to pack for them every day because they say it takes too long to go through the line. More work for me, but that's fine because this way I can make sure they have at least 1 healthy thing for lunch (I always pack fruit for them). Take care of your toe - that sounds really painful.

I'm heading out of town this weekend to see my brother and his family. They're finally settled in their new house, and I haven't seen him in over a year and I kinda miss the guy. Of the 5 kids in my family, he's the oldest and I'm the youngest (6 1/2 years in between us), and surprisingly we're closer than any of our other siblings. Weird, but cool.

Have a great weekend everyone! :goodvibes

Filet of Sole with crispy ginger and baby bok choy
POINTS® Value: 4
Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 15 min
Cooking Time: 15 min
Level of Difficulty: Moderate

Sole, a quick-cooking, mild fish, is topped with slightly-spicy, pan-fried ginger for a perfect flavour combo. Bright green bok choy adds a stunning colour contrast.

Ingredients

2 Tbsp canola oil, divided
1 pound(s) sole, four 4 oz fillets
2 pieces ginger root, fresh, about 2-inches each, peeled and cut into thin matchsticks
2 Tbsp low-sodium soy sauce, divided
1 spray(s) cooking spray, (5 one-second sprays per serving)
2 medium garlic clove(s), thinly sliced
1 tsp ginger root, fresh, minced
8 oz bok choy, baby-variety, cut in half lengthwise and washed in cold water

Instructions
• Place a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat; add 1 tablespoon of oil. Place fish in skillet and cook, gently flipping fillets so they do not break apart, about 2 to 3 minutes per side; remove fish to a plate and cover to keep warm.
• Add remaining tablespoon of oil to same skillet. When hot, add ginger matchsticks; cook for 3 minutes, turning once. Add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and cook until all liquid is absorbed; remove ginger from skillet.
• Off heat, coat skillet with cooking spray; add garlic and minced ginger and cook for 30 seconds. Add bok choy and cook until wilted, about 3 minutes; stir in remaining tablespoon of soy sauce.
• To serve, place 1/2 cup of bok choy in the centre of 4 plates. Top each with 1 piece of fish and 2 tablespoons of crispy ginger.

Carrot Cake

Serves 10/5 points per serving

Ingredients:
¾ cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup whole grain wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp table salt
1 large egg
2 med egg whites
¾ cup honey
¼ cup vegetable oil
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
3 cups grated carrots
3 oz light cream cheese, softened
3 tbsp powdered sugar
½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat the bottom of an eight inch round cake pan with non stick cooking spray. Line with wax paper and lightly coat paper with spray.

In a small bowl, combine flours, soda, cinnamon and salt. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat eggs, honey, oil and lemon juice until blended. Stir flour mixture and carrots into egg mixture just until well blended.

Spread batter into a prepared pan and bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 30 to 35 mins. Cool in pan 10 mins. Turn out of pan and cool completely.

Meanwhile, for frosting, beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla in a small bowl. Spread a thin layer over cooled cake and serve.

I've never noticed the fishy-ness of whole wheat pasta before :scratchin I've tried it in a few dishes before and we all just didn't really like the texture that much. I made it the other night with just a meat sauce and it wasn't too bad.

I have not had the fishy smell with regular whole wheat pastas. This is the first time this has happened, but I thought I would be extra good and get the kind with omega 3's in the pasta too and that is the kind that had the fishy smell. :) So, now I know to just stick with regular whole wheat pasta.

I made the mistake of getting on the scale midway through the week (yesterday) and was disturbed to see NO CHANGE at all. :confused3:eek: This is the type of thing that normally gets me wanting to quit, (which is why I try to avoid the scale except for weekly weigh-ins) but I controlled myself this time and told myself to stick it out until Monday and maybe it was a fluke???
Well, guess what came to visit today?? At least now I know why I wasn't losing... :rotfl2: I may have just enough time to show a little loss this week, but if I don't, (and stick to my points) next week should be a slam dunk. I feel so much better! Never thought I'd say those words when talking about that TOM.
And for those thinking, "doesn't this woman keep track of these things?" Yeah, I do, but thanks to another "woman" joining my household this summer, my routine has been completely out of wack. I'm hoping this doesn't last long, I may have to send her to live with her grandmother where she will do less damage.:lmao:

Elizabeth – I’m sorry you didn’t get a lot of time with your dr. that is so frustrating to have waited so long and then not get a chance to spend a lot of time talking with him. Can you call the office and ask him to order the other test so that you only have to go back for one result reading? I’m amazed that so many places wait to order tests and then have to have you come back time and again. Honestly, are they just trying to bulk up the amount of money they earn with the co-pay?
I don’t get Cooking Light but I’m going to try that recipe. I bought some Quinoa and just cooked it with broth and then never actually tried it (it just didn’t look appealing). But maybe with other ingredients it will be better (and I still have a bag of the stuff in my pantry).

Amanda – I hope you like the “cookies” I think the next batch I make I’m going to use canned pumpkin. I know you said you have trouble finding it, but for some reason we still get it in our stores occasionally so I stock up. I think the pumpkin and carrot cake mix will taste really good together.
I think one of the benefits of taking walks is really delving into discussions. Jim and I took a walk last night (not nearly as long as yours) and it was the perfect time to catch up without the TV or computer grabbing our attention.

Curly (once again at work without my cheat sheet) – Congratulations on giving up the Mexican dinner. Knowing your weak points and when to just stay away is a big deal. Heck the tennis team probably benefited more from your straight donation too!

Julie – I’ll look for it when we go shopping this weekend. We have a couple of Asian markets in the area so I should be able to find it. What is a mini-stepper?

Susan – You DO have a keeper. Made me misty just reading your post. What a sweety.

I did well yesterday. Tracked everything but did get really close to the high end of my range.
Breakfast: yogurt w/strawberries
Lunch: Tuna sandwich w/spinach salad
Snack: string cheese, yogurt delight, nectarine
Dinner: Panera Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken salad, pumpkin muffie
Dessert: Skinny cow and popcorn
Total: 1452 (goal 1200 – 1550) I even hit my target for protein without going over on carbs!
