We just returned from a stay and there was no word on the bands. However when we picked up our APs from guest services they were the plastic RFID cards, no switching, as they were new APs first time activated.
All parks we went to had RFID entrances except International gateway at Epcot. They were much faster getting through and into the parks. However this could be due to less people using them as they can't be used with paper tickets. But we really didn't have any trouble getting in.
We also used the RFID key card with charging privileges and it probably worked fine 90% of the time. Some of the errors were probably me hitting the pin code. The buttons are pretty small. Not tiny, just a little smaller than say those at a local supermarket machine.
Never a problem using the RFID tap on the room door. That was quite simple. All in all I'd say it worked quite smoothly for still getting the bugs out.
