I was wondering if anyone else that uses a wheelchair has been to Paradise Island . I use a large power wheelchair & would need transportation with a lift because I cannot transfer out of my wheelchair. Also I went on ,my 1st cruise this past Feb. & loved Castaway Cay but was disappointed that I could not go near the beach because there are no boardwalks. Is there any area @ CC whre i could watch my friends swim & have fun in the water? Thanks for any info! Steve

Steve,

I remember on Castaway Cay a few years ago, I saw a guy using a wheelchair specifically for the sand/beach. I don't know if it's something they have that is available for people with mobility disabilities, but you may receive a better answer from someone else.

The wheelchair he had was phenomenal! Real big, different-type wheels.

Good luck and enjoy your cruise!

We took my 90 year old grandmother on the cruise with us in 1999. Although she doesn't ordinarily need a wheelchair, because we were on the ship we got a wheelchair because we didn't want her to lose her balance. When we got to Castaway Cay, we simply rolled her off the ship and when we got near the beach they had wheelchairs with the big sand wheels. She transfered into one of those and we rolled her right up to the water, put her under an umbrella and got her a Pina Colada. She really enjoyed the day and we didn't have to worry about her falling down. They also had strollers for rent, along with the strollers with the big sand wheels for use on Castaway Cay. Hope this helps. I would still check with Disney, though. We rented our wheelchair from them so we didn't care where we left it. Yours sounds custom and you may not want to just leave it anywhere.

You can't transfer out of the wheelchair, so the dune buggys they hae at CC are out. There is a paved walk on the far end of the family beach that you could get reasonably close to the water from. You exit the ship at ground level there, no problem gettting off/on.
