A note from Bill Well

I'm the one who posted the IQ chart correlating IQ and votes in the 2000 election. As the "humor" contributor, I am the one that tracks down amusing stories or cartoons to post here at the American Assembler.

When I posted this chart I had no idea the ruckus it would cause from both the left, who opposed conjuring up the whole IQ business, and the right, who opposed the supposed stats.

As this has gotten a bit out of hand, I feel, and the editors feel, that I should take responsibility for posting this thing and clarify my reasons and intents about using what is clearly suspect data in the first place.

It was irresponsible of me to post this chart in this format and I apologize to the American Assembler and it's readers for having done so. It was never my intent for anyone to take this seriously and I erred in judgment in not realizing that people would. Even if this chart is not a hoax, as it most probably is, it was inappropriate to post it for it is simply offensive.

I have to say that I did not invent this chart. It's been floating around for years. All I did was dress it up a bit. But I regret posting it and I regret the fallacious distraction it's caused from the real issues presented on this site. And yes, I even apologize to Republicans for implying they are stupid. Some people around here still think there's hope for you all.

I now agree with some readers, and my editors, that, while I thought this would be a bit of amusing banter, it is damaging to the credibility of the Assembler and distracting from the real issues facing our country. My attempt to mock Republicans for voting for George Bush by posting suspect IQ data was not funny or constructive.

It is not the position of the American Assembler that there is any relevance whatsoever to any attempt to correlate intelligence or academic achievement with political leanings.

Once again, please accept my apologies for bad judgment and bad taste.

Sincerely,
Bill Well

IQ of 148. Educated in MA. Live in RI. voted for Kerry
No degree btw.
Am I a liberal elitist still?

I think that's the whole point of what many of us are trying to say.

It's not that smart people vote for Candidate A
and dumb people vote for Candidate B

It's not that people with values vote for Candidate C
and people who have no morals vote for Candidate D

It's not that snobs vote for Candidate E
and regular folks vote for Candidate F

There are a range of personalities and beliefs shared by people who vote for both parties.

Different people can have different opinions on how to improve the country and disagree without being disagreeable.

We are really more alike than we are different. It's a shame that the country has become so polarized that folks can't see that on many subjects Bush and Kerry agreed... but they had to make it sound like the other guy didn't agree, or go far enough, or went to far... all in an effort to move votes.

Let's take this IQ thing a little further, shall we? And I'll use the OP's source for this fine chart.

Let's see, looks as if this chart was originally posted on rec.org.mensa by a Robert Calvert. Wonder what he thinks of, say, folks with blonde hair?

Has anybody ever tried to find a correlation between hair color and IQ score? Even though the phrase "dumb blond" may sound like a cliché, I think there is a certain amount of truth to it. In fact, if you take a close look at pictures of some of the most brilliant people, you will find that almost all of them have dark brown hair. Some have light brown hair, a small percentage have jet black hair and almost none of them have blond or red hair. This is not the distribution that you see in the general population. Obviously, I'm omitting older people with gray hair from this assessment.
It shouldn't be too surprising why those with jet black hair would be underrepresented among the most intelligent since these are the people who usually belong to low IQ races. But the reason why this same trend holds true for those with light colored hair is a little more complicated. Is blond hair a sign of inbreeding in some cases?

Wonder how he feels about African-Americans?

I can only imagine that those who would like to see social welfare policies unconditionally offered (most blacks) or unconditionally abolished (most radical Republicans) are substantially less intelligent than average.

How about his belief that multiculturalism is all a Jewish plot to lower the average IQ of Americans?

The Jews are constantly advocating any policy that could lower the average IQ of the white race. It seems that the Jews are only
capable of seeing other people as a resource, not unlike coal or iron ore, to be exploited and used for their own purposes.

Credible source? You decide.

Edited to add: Feel free to ask a moderator to delete this thread. I hate posting crap like this that obviously comes from an ignorant bigot but if you're going to post his chart, I'm gonna let you know what else he thinks.

To paraphrase Dale Earnhardt Jr:

"The table of IQs by state spreading across liberal blogdom is purportedly based on the Ravens Advanced Progressive IQ Matrices test. Psychometrician Chris Brand tells me: "John Raven knows of no comprehensive State-by-State data for his test."

The IQ by State hoax is spreading -- Lots of liberal blogs are posting it because it makes them feel superior to see scientific proof that Blue States are smarter than Red States.

The original source for the IQ by State data is somebody calling himself "Robert Calvert."

"Calvert" claims the IQ numbers are from the Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrices test, but that test is only for higher IQ individuals, such as applicants for executive jobs. Instead, the Standard Progressive Matrices are the correct test for determining the average population of a large region.

"Calvert's numbers are clearly fallacious. Robert Calvert, the joker who apparently fabricated the data in the table that purports to show that smart states voted overwhelmingly for Gore in 2000, claims to have been inspired by the fascinating and important 2002 book "IQ and the Wealth of Nations" by Richard Lynn. As the title suggests, that book is about nations, not states. There is no table of data on IQ by state in it, as many have claimed."

Uuuuuuh, yes, there is.

The link posted by crazygoofy is a chart that correlates average IQ with how that state voted in the presidential election, althought the author of the chart does admit some difficulty authenticating the IQ numbers, he says they do correlate well with SAT/ACT indications of IQ's for high school graduates in the respective states. It may or may not be accurate, as annotated by the author.

The snopes article is a spoof, intended as a joke, stating that great percentages of those with high IQ's would not vote for Bush.

Chart:
State Avg. IQ 2004
1 Connecticut 113 Kerry
2 Massachusetts 111 Kerry
3 New Jersey 111 Kerry
4 New York 109 Kerry
5 Rhode Island 107 Kerry
6 Hawaii 106 Kerry
7 Maryland 105 Kerry
8 New Hampshire 105 Kerry
9 Illinois 104 Kerry
10 Delaware 103 Kerry
11 Minnesota 102 Kerry
12 Vermont 102 Kerry
13 Washington 102 Kerry
14 California 101 Kerry
15 Pennsylvania 101 Kerry
16 Maine 100 Kerry
17 Virginia 100 Bush
18 Wisconsin 100 Kerry
19 Colorado 99 Bush
20 Iowa 99 Bush
21 Michigan 99 Kerry
22 Nevada 99 Bush
23 Ohio 99 Bush
24 Oregon 99 Kerry
25 Alaska 98 Bush
26 Florida 98 Bush
27 Missouri 98 Bush
28 Kansas 96 Bush
29 Nebraska 95 Bush

45 South Dakota 90 Bush
46 South Carolina 89 Bush
47 Wyoming 89 Bush
48 Idaho 87 Bush
49 Utah 87 Bush
50 Mississippi 85 Bush

Snopes fake article:
Stupid people love Bush
Preliminary results:
IQ Above 140: Kerry 80%, Bush 20%.
120-140: Kerry 65%, Bush 35%.
100-120: Kerry 54%, Bush 46%.
80-100: Bush 54%, Kerry 46%.
60-80: Bush 60%, Kerry 15%, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 25%.

Both things "show" that the people with IQ>100 mostly voted Kerry and people with IQ < 100 mostly voted Bush. One is listed as definitely satire, one is listed as "maybe authentic, maybe not." (heh)

According to snopes:
"Claim: Study finds that persons of lower intelligence are more
likely to support President George W. Bush.
Status: False.
Every election cycle brings its share of subtle (and not-so-subtle) humor pieces proclaiming that measurements have determined one candidate's intelligence to be much higher than another's, or that studies have found supporters of a particular candidate or party are, in general, significantly smarter as a group than supporters of the opposite party. It seems no satirical article that makes reference to a "study" (usually conducted by a fictitious academic or political group), no matter how broadly written, won't be mistaken by some readers for a valid news report."

Look, I am the last person to get involved in political threads, but if you can't read between the lines here, maybe you ought to have your IQ checked. How can anyone get sucked into believing such nonsense? Guess you better watch out for the gangs putting the drugs on the gas pumps too!

Then we would have to argue if education = intelligence. I would certainly say no. You can be brilliant, but not have the means to afford school. You can also be an idiot and have parents who can pay for you to get a Doctorate in Basketweaving. You could also argue that when you have Post-graduate study, you are more likely to be brainwashed by liberal (or conservative! depending on your school) propaganda.

edited to fix chart

This is essentially the data that I quoted as having seen on C-SPAN coverage of a DLC meeting where the Democrat leadership themselves were worried about the educational demographics of thier voters after the 2000 election.

My recollection of their comments were that they were extremely worried about their appeal to more educated voters.

From the looks of your 2004 data, they have narrowed the gap for high school dropouts, but the gap has widened amongst high school and college graduates, compared to 2000.

And the margin democrats enjoy with the post-graduate group is heavily weighted by the multitudes of "doctorates" in education. Every high school and school board seems to have these "doctors of education" coming out of the woodwork.

How did I get referenced in this???

Perhaps my memory is getting as bad as my IQ.

Looks like the data the OP is referencing is questionable at best and it appears the source certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Apparently the OP still stands by it though.

Maybe a repeat but what the heck.

How can so many smart people be so dumb?

Yup, still standing right here. You have a lot of nerve questioning my sources! Do you think you're John Ashcroft or something. No, wait, you're Mr. Baseball. :wave2: Nice to meetcha.

Oh and Elwood, honey, when you find the answer to that please let me know. I've always wondered. Thanks.
