What's your opinion? (title changed to be P.C.)

pnelson-I was going to post something similar earlier, but decided not too.

Being a thin person myself I have put up with comments about my weight and eating habits all my life.

Others may argue that she(Lara) is unhealthy, but if you took one look at my sister you would think the same thing about her. Is she anorexic? NO WAY! She has had 2 children and gained 45-50 pounds with each pregnancy. My neice was born 2 1/2 months ago and she is almost back to her pre-pregnancy weight. She is thin because that is her body type.

We have been judged all our lives. It seems that these comments are ok to be made about thin people.

I was afraid to open this one...

...in the asias I'm considered "quite healthy-winkwink"

...in New York, I'm "normal"

...but in certain places, I've heard, in not so masked tones, "stick" aimed at me  (am NOT a stick, LOL!!:p)

It's all relative.:) But she DOES look too tanned.:p

you are right. My niece is 29, is 4'11 and weighs 88 lbs. She's as cute as a button. She's not too thin for her frame but so many people tell her she's too small. How awful it is for her to hear these comments.

Those of us that fight the weight, are a bit green with envy as she eats many things we don't and never gains an ounce. It can be as hard putting/keeping weight on as it is for the rest of us to lose it and keep it off.

As far as Laura goes, I hope she get some help, she may be ill, either physcially or emotionally.

she may think she looks hot now. But she is going to suffer when she grows older. This is just NOT HEALTHY! I dont' care what people's excuses are. I know how a born-thin body looks like, and this is way beyond that.

By the way, I think Maria Shriver is getting there too. I dont' know what's wrong, but she looks like a skull lately. You can see her cheekbone sticking out. :(

Just too sad. I want to look good myself too, but I will never abuse my body in such a way.

Augghh! Her arms look like an old lady's. Way too thin! More like anorexic.

I knew who you were talking about by just reading your subject line. Yes, she is too thin.

Well....the general consensus is yes, she does look too thin.

But to be politically correct, I'll go and edit the thread title.

sigh.....................:o

A man's opinion here...

I like my women with some meat on thei bones!

Ick (how un-manly, but it is MHO)

There was an interview with her Mother and she snapped that she has always been thin - it's "her fast irish metabolism"

Have you seen her in Twin Peaks and movies like "Threesome" and "Mobsters"?? She's at least 25-30lbs heavier in those movies. You can tell she is naturally thin and small boned, but in that picture she looks ill.

Slightly OT - I saw some pictures of Calista in People magazine and she looks really good. She put on some weight and looks healthy, but still tiny

Those before/after shots are so sad. :(

I have a dear friend who struggled and almost died from an eating disorder that started in high school after going through a tragic event in her life.

She was probably as thin or even thinner then Lara at the worst of it, it was very scary, she lost her hair to the point that you could see her scalp and you could literally see her bones. Her parents put her in therapy but it still wasn't working. Then they changed to another wonderful therapist who was able to break through and help her realize why she was starving herself. It wasn't all about being thin, it was all about the control because at the time when it started, her life seemed so out of control, at least she could control her weight.

Even years later, after she started to eat again(maybe 1 meal a day) and after she had her first baby her body still suffered from the effects of the almost 8 years of starving herself. One day at a store she passed out, she had suffered a slight heart attack at only 26 years old this was her wake up call. The thought that she could've passed out behind the wheel of the car, with her DD in the car, scared her to the reality of her illness.

Thankfully now she is at a VERY healthy weight but to this day she still, at times, struggles with her illness, she says she probably will for life.

My point of sharing her story is it isn't like people like Lara can just eat a burger, it is a mental illness that they need to confront and until they're ready or hit bottom(hopefully they're still alive at this point) you can't make them what to help themselves. Unfortunetly, it is a much more complicated illness then most people think. :(

Interesting post. I've kind of cringed as I've read through it. As an "underweight", 105 lb. 5'3, the common tone I read here is that she looks "unhealthy". Now maybe her weight loss is her choice but I have to agree with the other posters to remind people that it is very hurtful to say to someone that they need to gain a few pounds. I would never go up to an even slightly overweight person and say, "Hi, how are you? You're looking pretty chubby these days!" but people seem to have a very easy time saying "Hi, how are you? You're fading away to nothing!" You may think it is a compliment but growing up being called scrawny and skinny is just as difficult as being called fatso, both conditions are usually not chosen.

I understand that not all thin people are anorexic, and if you didn't have before and after pictures I would just guess she is skinny. But the before and after pictures seem to tell a story of someone who is ill - whether from an eating disorder or some other type of illness. I would hope that her friends and loved ones would intervene on her behalf. I didn't think she was too thin until I saw what she looked like before. WOW! She looks like she has been in a concentration camp. I would hope her family and friends would intervene as well if she became obese. Being too thin or too fat each have their own life threatening medical issues that need to be addressed.

I don't think the point of this thread is to single out Lara Flynn Boyle, but to hightlight the issue that being too thin is as much of a problem as being too fat.

My sil is 4'11'' and weighs about 90 lbs. She looks gaunt when she wears a bathing suit. Maybe she is a "healthy" weight for her frame, but she has been unable to conceive and has been trying for several years. Her OB/GYN told her after many tests that the reason she doesn't have a cycle or ovulate is because her body fat is too low. He told her he would not consider treating her unless she gained some weight .

Yes it is very true that those who suffer from anorexia or bulimia often have a life long battle with it. :( I pray for your friend's continued healing and strength. I'm glad that she is doing better.

You might not go up to someone like me and say that, but believe me, there are plenty who do.

I can't speak for all of us who posted on this thread and said that she looks ill, but I can say my post didn't come from maliciousness or jealousy. Just look at those before and after photos. she looked great before. Now she looks skeletal. It's pretty obvious to me she lost weight and it's not just her natural size. She doesn't look healthy.
I think we all know that some people are born thin, some are born fat, and there are people on both ends of the spectrum that really need help overcoming an eating disorder.

What concerns me are the number of unrealistically thin bodies there are in Hollywood and the effect it has on girls my sister's age who will stop at nothing to achieve a body they can never hope to have. As far as it not being ok to say a celebrity needs to lose weight, I don't see girls nearly killing themselves to look like Camryn Manheim.

i've been saying that about Maria Shriver for years.. she has needed a good meal since the 1990's.

I guess being married to a fitness nut doesn't help in her case. Maria Shriver looked perfectly cute/normal on her wedding.. find those pictures and you will see. Now she's been needing a good meal for a very long time....

I agree with some of the others who are also on the slight side- I'm a tiny person, and there have been times when it's been hard to put and keep weight on. I also get dark very easily in the sun . I think we should cut her some slack. Just my .02

But what really bugs me about this thread is that if I opened up a thread that says "Don't you think she is too fat?" then I would be called names and the thread would be locked!

It's a double standard that'll never go away I'm afraid.

How can ANYONE look at those photos and say there isn't something WRONG with her health? Did she just acquire this metabolism? Gimme a break- something is going on here. She looked FANTASTIC before, slender? Sure! But not UNHEALTHY.... I have a cousin who has been underweight her whole life- her head doesn't look 5 times too big for her body! The more people who defend this current "lollipop" look, the more eating disorders there will be.
