We've always taken our kids to Disney in October, and are wondering if Sept would be a better month to go. Crowds, weather, less conventions, etc?? Any opinions out there?

We have visited in both Sept and Oct. (as well as a few other times of the year.)

What we found was:

Sept had less crowds, but shorter park hours. There are quite a few rehabs, but we know that we will be back again next year, so we didn't stress about a few things being down. The payoff for the almost lack of wait times made it worth it.

Oct had a bit more crowds, but nothing like any peak season. the park hours can be a bit longer, depending on what convention in in the area. We got several "notes" left on our camper door informing us of park schedule changes that took place all of a sudden. We were flexable, so this wasn't a big deal, but if you were on a schedule that might screw you up a bit.

The weather in both of those months is up in the air. Sept is supposed to be worse with storms, but when we visited (in 2000) the weather was much dryer and warmer than our trip in Oct (in 2002).

We have discussed it and if we could pick any time of the year (reguardless of having to take children out of school or any other factor) we would pick any time in Sept everytime.

We absolutely love September. The crowds are so low. This past September they were a little larger than years past, but still low. Yes, park hours are shorter, but you don't need them long. You can get all your touring done in the shorter hours. We spend our evenings at Epcot, the Boardwalk, DTD, miniature golf (usually open till 11) and swimming or hot tub. We find our vacations much more relaxing and enjoyable.

Agree with replies above, but would hate to miss the Food & Wine Festival in October! This year it's starting earlier...Oct. 1...so you can go early October, and still get some of the pluses of September...low crowds, still warm, etc.

We've done both months too, and there also seems to be a difference in the temps. September can be full-on HOT, and October can be hot too, but there's a better chance of a cool-off.

Isn't September lovebug season? You know those bugs that seem to have 2 heads (attached at the bottom). I remember being grossed out by them.:p

DW and I have gone the last week of September for the last several years. It isn't as hot as the begining of the month and the parks are empty. 2 years ago we boarded the parking tram at EPCOT and found we were the only passengers. We are talking about going in October for the Food and Wine but no wait lines are tough to pass up.

My wife and myself stayed this past Sept. and we thought the crowds were just perfect. Sept. is hurricane season in Florida but we were there for 12 days and never had a drop of rain.

We have been the last 2 years in September and we Love it during that time.Last year we were there for a week and never seen a drop of rain. That was definetly a first.
Now we are wanting to go to the Food and Wine festival but we love September so much we just cant figure out what to do.

Thanks for all of the wonderful comments!!

Byrd's advice is priceless... September is sooner so why wait?

Maybe I should take that advice.

Thanks to all.

I can't believe no one mentioned this!

most of september is Value season too! ;) In October - prices go up a bit at the resorts.

to touch on the love bug subject as akur brought it up.....

we didn't see any when we were there in mid to late oct so perhaps they are gone by then.

during out trip mid to late sept we saw them, but they weren't that bad.

We were there this year mid to late August and they showed up our last week there (just around the time that the crowds were thinning out with most folks going home to get back to school)

Since they don't bite or sting, we didn't mind them so much and they (for us) were certainly worth putting up with to enjoy the lower crowds.

Ahhh - Sept in WDW. Perhaps in 2005.
