This happened when we were there in 98', dw was 7 months pregnant with dd.
We had just come out of EPCOT, when it started to rain. Nothing unusual in that I hear you say, it rains alot in Florida in August... It rained so hard that we had to stop the car, as the wipers couldn't shift it fast enough, we just stopped dead centre in the road we were travelling along (the one past DTD), we knew that no-one was going to go into the back of us, as there was no way anyone would be able to see to drive. Once it cleared very slightly, and we could see ahead, we could see downed trees all over the place (and garden furniture!), directly in front of us. We couldn't drive forwards, due to a tree semi blocking the road. I managed to drive round the tree and on to the road which has the LBV hotels on it (the ones which are not classed as Disney hotels, but still have some of the privledges!)
The rain and now hail, was coming down like I've never seen before (or since!), we pulled into the first hotels carpark and drove underneath the canopy (where you pull up to let valet parking take your car, I imagine!). Lots of other people were doing the same. After 15 minutes of so, it had seemed to ease off (again only very slightly), so we thought we'd risk pulling out and continuing our journey back to our hotel. Big mistake!
We drove into the car park straight into what must have been a couple of feet of water. The car immediately stalled. It wouldn't restart. (meanwhile the golf ball hail and torrential rain had been joined by lightening strikes) After a few minutes, I managed to get it to start by jamming my right foot hard on the accelerator and my left foot on the brake, it was the only way we could get it to come back to life. We continued out of the car park and across the junction into the Crossroads area, into TGI's car park. Once safely inside, ready after our excitment for much needed refreshments, we saw, just like in the movies, an enormous procession of police cars turn into the road we'd just escaped from, close it off and disappear up it!
Watching the news that night, it turned out that a mini tornado, a twister, had hit the DTD area, and unknowingly we'd sat/drove/cowered through the entire incident!
Now when it rains hard, an all too frequent event in Florida, I get very jumpy!
