Maybe it's a Florida thing, but it really irritates me how they run through the part...

With liberty and justice for all.

We had a pause in there when I was a kid. Hmmm...little things are really irritating me today. But this one does it every time I hear it!

I don't remember any pause when I said the pledge in school. However, that was many years ago:eek: . DD says it in her preschool but I don't think the public schools in NJ allow it. I believe they have a moment of silence. I'm happy with the fact the DD knows it and says it at all.

hmm  no pause here either. Every morning the whole school stands to say the pledge toward whatever flag they can see. Our PTFO now says it to the Pepsi machine when they are meeting since there isnt a flag in the teacher's lounge. I have noticed kids walking down the halls will stop and join you if they see an adult standing still repeating it. If the adults ignore it and keep walking then the kids blow it off too. On Fridays they usually have someone special leading it.....student council, guest, or someone the principal has chosen like Bday kids or kids that havent missed any school.

I definately remember a pause.::yes:: I'm talking 30 some years ago. Maybe that was before we had to start lengthening the school days, and skipping recess and all that, because "Johnny can't read," so we just rush through it all. You know, go through the motions. Kind of like the school day itself.

I understand what you mean. This fall at DS's first football game, when the Star Spangled Banner was sung, the singer's voice was angelic, but she clealy did not know the words! Very articulate, and did not mumble "what so proudly we watched, as the twilight was gleaming"! Man! My 10 year old DD looked at me and said, "Mom, we are going to kick their butts! They're so stupid they don't even know the words to our National Anthemn!" (Of course we got beat:o ) I want to know who auditioned this youg lady. Who said "Yes dear, you will represent our school.

Sad. Very sad.

Keep the Faith!

Other than a weekly assembly when I was in a Christian middle school we never said the Pledge of Allegiance.

This really saddens me - after September 11, 2001 everyone was so patriotic but it seems that it is a distant thing in the past now.

We should encourage our children to say the Pledge Of Allegiance and know its meaning and the correct words. It seems like all these "groups / organizations" are taking so much away. We, as a country, should really go back to the way things were and are meant to be. We should be so thanful that we are free and our flag is the symbol of that!!

I went to public high school here in Georgia (I graduated high school in 1998), and we said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. I don't recall there being a pause, but I could be wrong. We also said the pledge at the private/Christian middle and elementary school I attended. As a matter of fact, we also said the Pledge to the Christian Flag and Pledge to the Bible there too. It makes me sad when kids don't respect our country and all the people who have fought to make and keep us free. :(

I can assure you, the Pledge is still being recited in NJ! In my classroom, we pause after Liberty! All the other teachers in my district do the same!

My daughter signs the Pledge, so I don't know if there is a pause in the ASL version (or the six year old ASL version of it!)

I was a little confused, because I sub at the local high school and we say the pledge every morning. I haven't subbed in a few months, so I thought maybe it was a new thing.

And we pause after liberty, also.

I graduated from public school in 1988, and we had the pause after "with liberty".

Is it a southern US thing that they don't pause?

Thank you all you pausers! :teeth: I'm soooooooooooooo glad to hear that. And glad to hear it from those in NJ. That was where I grew up. ;)

I graduated from a public high school in GA in 89 and we said it every day...including the pause after liberty. ;) Of course I also remember a college history professor lecturing us on the fact that there should be no pause in between "one nation" and "under God." I mean, this man went on a serious rant with it! Apparantly he did this at the start of every quarter. We were made to say the pledge at the start of every class untill we went an entire week with no one messing up the "One nation underGod (notice, no pause! :p ) indivisible with liberty and justice for all."

On another note, my 3½ year old learned the pledge at his preschool this year. They say it every day as well. Of course he says it "and to the republican for witches stand." :teeth:

We say the Pledge every day at my public high school. And there is a pause after liberty. I don't understand why schools are banning it. That just doesn't seem right at all.
What makes me especially angry is the way that people don't seem to respect the national anthem. Whenever we go to a hockey game, people start screaming after "land of the free..." so much so that the singer actually has to STOP completely and wait for people to shut up before they can continue. I realize that it's a wonderful thing that we're a free nation and everything, but i think both the singer and the actual anthem need some more respect. I also wasn't too impressed when the whole section full of fans of the opposing hockey team at last weekend's Monarchs game decided to scream out "go Hartford!" and a whole bunch of obscenities every time the singer paused in the song. That shouldn't be done.

Wow, Monarch! Glad to hear your hs says the pledge. :teeth: You're right...more respect needs to be shown. I'm in complete agreement with that.

I'm a product of Fl public schools. We always paused after liberty so it's not just a northern thing. It's a shame that our kids our not taught patriotism in school anymore. When I was my sons den leader I stressed patriotism. If they weren't being taught in school they were certainly going to learn it in scouts. I too get upset when people don't show respect for the anthem or the flag. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart so I'll stop before I get to fired up. If you children are not being taught in school please teach them at home. Remember, they will follow your lead.

I'm not sure what any of you are referring to when you say a "pause" in the Pledge of Allegiance. The way it is taught, is with a specific cadence or rhythm --

I pledge allegiance
To the flag
Of the United States of America
And to the Republic
For which it stands
One nation
Under God
Indivisible
With Liberty
And Justice
For all

There are several "pauses" but not of any length. Just the same as when you learn the alphabet, prayers, poems, nursery rhymes, etc. What kind of pause are you expecting after the word "Liberty"? And who is "banning" it? It's a natural word grouping to memorize it.

IMHO, I would be happy that school children are saying it at all. I don't think any disrespect is being given because there isn't a "pause" after Liberty.

I have heard the Pledge done both ways when I have subbed. I have also heard it done slow and fast depending on who is leading it. I agree it should be done with respect and at a nice pace. What gets to me is the number of kids I have to redirect during the Pledge becuase they want to do something else.
