Okay, I teach high school students and I am seeing these "jelly bracelets" I keep hearing a "rumor" about the colors of each bracelet has some kind of meaning. Could anyone out there give me info and direct me to websites because I would like to forward this information to my principal. Thank you in advance for any info. Please be careful with your wording. I don't want this thread to close so please no inappropriate language.

I heard it is going on in Elem school with second graders. Each color represents a favor a girl must do for a boy if they are wearing it and the boy breaks it off. I heard Black is oral type stuff. The boy originally gives the bracelets to the girl and she has to carry out certain acts.

My brother is/was a H.S. senior this year (graduated yesterday). I had seen these alot on several girls. Supposedly, each bracelet and each color represents a specific "act" of an unmentionable subject. I could not beleive this! But, I have heard this from other people too. Things have changed since my day!

This was a topic of discussion on a local radio station here not too long ago. Apparently, the girls are performing the acts when the bracelet is snapped. Quite a few teachers called in and were disgusted about what was going on in the scools with regards to these bracelets. But it seems the girls are willing participants in this latest craze. It won't be too long before someone cries "rape" or is in fact raped because of these stpind things.

They have already been banned in a few schools in my hometown. Not the high schools but the middle and elementary! The principals said they havent seen them yet but are watching like a hawk. Teachers said it is better to ban them now before it becomes an even bigger issue.

omg I had no idea they meant anything!

I wore them back in the 80's. They didn't mean anything then unless I was completely clueless.

oh my heavens!!! i hadn't heard about this!!!!

geesh...times sure have changed. we wore jelly bracelets long ago because we LIKED them...not for, well, other purposes!!

The first time I heard about this was about a week ago on The View. I was shocked because I had never heard of this. Is this going on more in certain parts of the country than others? I've never even seen the girls around here wearing the jelly bracelets to begin with!

::yes::

We wore them because Madonna did. I only heard something last week about their possible meaning something nowadays.

A lot of the kids wear them around here. I think they just wear them for the style - to go with the outfit.
DD says the high school kids just laugh that parents and school districts are getting so uptight about it. Whils she knows all about the supposed meanings - she says she has never heard of anyone at her school using them that way.
Thankfully she hangs with a pretty good crowd - I'm sure it could be happening - but I would think it would be the exception rather than the rule.
I remember for awhile at our elementary school in CA no one was allowed to wear red or black tops - gang colors. Finally someone came to their senses and said - red is our school color - get real and get past it. While there was a concern with gangs, there was no evidence that there was any problem AT ALL at our elementary school.

Yep, but this "trend" has been over for a while around here, they used to be really popular!!::yes::

This was first heard of about a year or so ago and I thought it had gone away but when school was still going on this year the Principal at the school I work at sent an email for all the teachers to be on alert for these things. I was very shocked because my school is grades 3-5 and our county is pretty much a wonderful community. It is very sad.

Oh I am so sad. From the Snopes article:
In October 2003 the Alachua Elementary school in Florida banned children from wearing the stylish accents in response to rumors of the bijous conveying sexual meanings. Kids in that school were referring to them as "sex bracelets," and even pupils as young as those at the Grade 3 level were making inappropriate sexual references about them.
I mentored at this school when I was in college. It is really an underprivledged school. Drugs are rampant in this community. And it is not strange for a family's car to be worth more than their home. :(

 :scared1: :worried: :sad2: :guilty: :faint: :o OMG, I am soooo naive, I don't know what I would do without the folks here at Dis..

How awful, middle schools??

I used to wear a POW bracelet in HS, and I thought I was a radical thinker....

What does it mean that Madonna used to wear about 20 of the black ones????

I had heard about this but have not seen it here in Vermont. THen again my girls are in elementary school.

However, both of them love wearing them....they got the idea from the LIZZIE MCGUIRE show on the Disney Channel.

So sad!!!

What made me do this post was my friend went to pick up her daughter Friday from school (An elementary K-6) and saw a little girl being escorted into the office with a pocket full on money and bracelets. This little girl (unsure of her grade level) was selling them around the school. She overheard the school secretary talk about what the colors meant? And for the record, this is a very good school district. She was shocked!!!!!

Haven't heard of that up here in Canada. I asked my teens and they thought it was hilarious. Have any other Canadians heard this?

What does it mean if a boy is wearing it?

When *I* was in school, jellies just made you look cool and "in"!! A lot has changed, hasn't it?!
