is that some people on another message board are more concerned about whether Mardi Gras is going to be held next year that about the death and destruction.

Unbelievable!

My thoughts are that when NO is rebuilt, we're bringing our tourist dollars to them, but I am realistic that it's not happening anytime soon.

What a bunch of idiots! Tell them to plan on spring break if they want a drunken b**b show. How utterly ridiculous. I can't even find the right words to express my disgust!!!!

Are you kidding?

I'm with Poohnatic--we will visit when they welcome visitors...Mardi Gras will be a missed tradition in New Orleans--but it will go on in other parts of the state. Some people have no grasp on reality.

I was a little taken aback this evening.

I was at the local Publix. They have signs posted that you can add a Katrina relief donation to your grocery bill. So I asked the cashier, a young girl who looked to be college age, if she'd add a sum to my debit card when she was finished ringing up. She had to get someone else to give her the code to do it, which prompted me to ask her if many people were contributing.

She said they just started doing it, so that's why she didn't know the code yet.

Then she said she thought they were really overdoing and hyping the situation in New Orleans. And that the only reason the media cared was because it's a party town.

????????

I'm sure Mardi Gras can be celebrated anywhere - I think New Orleans is going to have alot more on their plate than worrying about a party.

betty,

OMG! I visited in '84 for the World's Fair and we had fun, but weren't there to party. It's heartbreaking to know the history and know that it will never be the same. I loved the architecture of the French Quarter and the restaurants we dined at. It was soooo much more than a 'party town' and I hope that at least some of that will be restored.

I believe it is a statewide celebration--of course the closer to New Orleans....the longer you celebrate :teeth: .

I'm sure Baton Rouge will be having a big party to take the edge off in Feb/Mar ;). They'll probably need it by then. Mardi Gras is not a tradition that a Hurricane can scare away. It just scared it off of Bourbon Street.

Poohnatic--FREAKY coincidence....I went to the Worlds Fair as well---but due to my age...I can promise you, I didn't party either ;).

SO TRUE!! I work in downtown Baton Rouge and my building is a few blocks away from a large shelter. Today our building was locked down due to some alleged fights going on. :guilty: Heck, I could have used something to take the edge off today!

Mardi Gras is only one of several large events in NOLA each year.

VooDoo Fest combines the hottest in up and coming as well as major rock artists with legendary blues artists, and is held around Halloween every year. I tend to think it will be cancelled or perhaps moved and turned into a fundraiser this year.

Th New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is held around the end of April. It's simply too early to determine what will happen with the next Jazz Fest. My guess is that if ANYTHING is going to happen in NOLA in the next year, it's Jazzfest, which many feel is the true heart and soul of the city. :music: :music:

I agree. I was just saying how as soon as it's possible, I want to go, stay at a small independent inn, and give my tourist $$ to some of the small business owners who have lost everything...

We talked about this at work today and thought it would be great if they could have a mardi gras in NO especially for those who are their helping to rebuild. Of if you come to Mardi Gras you get to help with rebuilding.

Yeah we know it wouldn't worki but it would be a great idea.
