Here in Arizona we have an endless supply of scorpians, rattlesnakes and tarantula's. In the summer months temps often reach a balmy 115 degrees.
Oh.....the red rocks of Sedona are pretty.

I, too was thinking about my state and what we have to offer. Here's my list:

ARKANSAS
Cows.
Chickens. Chicken houses, chicken farms. Rows and rows of buildings that used to be chicken farms. Chickens in pens going down the road on the back of Tyson trucks on the way to their, ahem, destiny.
Flies. Lots-n-lots-n-lots-n-lots of flies. "What's up with these flies?" people ask when they come here. See above, ie. Chickens and cows.
Oh, yeah, and we've got Wal-Mart.
Can't beat that list! ;)

To add to this list, I know that you have a young daughter. I'm not sure when you're planning this trip, but if it's before she hits about age 10 or so, Santa's Village and Storyland are fun for that age. We also have some beaches (albeit, cold).
You can take the gondola to the top of Wildcat and have an amazing view of Mt Washington, Maine, and northern NH. There is also an aerial tramway at Cannon Mountain.
The Basin in Franconia Notch is free, a very short walk, and neat to see. The Flume and Lost River are both beautiful, easy (about an hour or two depending on how much you explore) walks along beautiful waterfalls. We also like to walk down to Glen Ellis Falls (a few $ for parking gets you in). It's a 5 or 10 minute walk, and gorgeous, brings you right to the bottom of the falls.
Loads of outlet shopping
The M/S Mt Washington, a big boat out on Lake Winnipesaukee
Drive the Kankamagus Highway (twisty, right through the mountains)
There are some great towns right on Lake Winnipesaukee with cute little shops that are fun to explore
Portsmouth is a great city to explore. There's shopping, it's on the water, there's a theater that often puts on both children's and adults plays
Take a trip out to the Isles of Shoals

There's loads to do in NH

Well, I live in northern CA now, but I'm still new to the area and getting to know the state, plus someone else has already summed it up. So I'll tell you about my old "home turf" of MN and WI

Minnesota:
Tons of stuff in the Twin Cities: Science museum, art institute, children's museum, MN history museum - and more; lots of great parks to explore; the Mississippi river; Mall of America (or, as my DB calls it, "the temple of American Consumerism" :rotfl2: ); state capitol; St. Paul's cathedral; the skyway system in Minneapolis is fun; Nicollette Mall; Orchestra Hall, Ordway theater...
There's tons of state parks, and many have great historical sites and interpretive programs. One of the best is Itasca state park, which is the headwaters of the Mississippi River. You can wade accross the Mississippi!
Walnut Grove, MN has a great Laura Ingalls Wilder museum and program if you enjoy the Little House on the Prairie books.
I always love the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in the north.
Duluth is a great city to visit - the farthest western port for Atlantic Ocean vessels with lots of fun places to explore.
Rochester is home to the Mayo Clinic and one of the best Barnes and Nobel stores ever - it's in a renovated theater and has a fun atmosphere!
On the weirder end of things, I believe the world's largest ball of twine/string is in MN somewhere, and there's always the SPAM museum in Austin, MN.

In WI:
Millwaukee has museums, shopping, and Lake Michigan
Madison has the state capitol area (awesome!), more museums, lakes, parks
You can see the Mississippi river on the W side of the state and Lake Michigan on the other
Door county is amazingly beautiful - a great vacation spot!
For more of the "cheese" factor in a vacation, check out Wisconsin Dells. Water Parks, Ripleys, Mini-Golf, amazing resorts with indoor water parks, and of course the beautiful Dells that started it all.
There's also the Mustard Museum and the Circus museum in Mt. Horeb, the troll capitol.
Or Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen in Spring Green, where you can also see the House on the Rock.

In Wisconsin
You could see the Kettle Moraine
The largest Marsh in the world, "Horican Marsh"
Milwaukee has a Children's Museum and regular museum
Green Bay Packer Stadium-The Frozen Tundra
Take a boat ride in Wisconsin Dells-also has one of the largest water parks in the U.S. "Noah's Ark"
You could take a Ferry Ride from WI to MI

Kansas, southwest Kansas to be exact. LOTS OF WIDE OPEN SPACE! You can see for miles and miles.

I live in Houston TX and here's what i love.. The beaches. Galveston is close to us but there's Padre Island National Seashore which is very beautiful and a coastline in between the . Dallas where JFK was shot and also JR. San Antonio is absolutely the best with Riverwalk and the Alamo, Austin is very eclectic and yuppie and a wonderful place to bike (Lance Armstrong lives there when he's in the country), the friendly, proud Texans :wave2: :wave2: . I just love it here
