My DD is 10 mos and I am thinking that the ped will want to give her the MMR at 12 mos. I think I want to wait on that one a bit and I cant remember what the time frame is for giving it. I am thinking 12-24 mos? This is the only shot that makes me a bit nervous with all the Autism reports (not trying to start a debate). I was just wondering about waiting and what the time frame for this shot is. Thanks

The MMR is a 12 month shot. If you are concerned I would ask to do them seperately rather than all 3 at the same time. I know right now Measles is on an uprise so if it were me I would have them do the measles and then wait and do the others. It has not been a problem for my pediatrician to change/adjust the vaccination schedule as we needed. I don't allow more than one shot each time so if there *is* a reaction I can better figure out what it is to.

good luck :goodvibes

Do some research and determine when/if you want to give it to her. IMO, the schedule is insane anyways.

It's not always 12 months. My ped does it at 15 months but I am delaying until at least 18, but probably 24 months.

ahh that makes sense-I was basing it on when my DD got hers started and I happened to ask today at the Peds so his answer was rather fresh in my mind, LOL.

Is your ped separating them? I wasn't sure if that was still an option....I read on Merck's website that they did offer single doses, but it was limited. I would love that option.....

my son will be 3 on the 21st of this month, we just did his last week.

i wasnt comfortable with doing any of the shots that early, so i waited till they were older.
my other 2 kids also had theirs at 3yo.

Some ped's do it at 12, some at 15, and some at 18 months. I highly recommend reading Dr. Sears The Vaccine Book....lots of good info. Here are some good points:

*Separating the vaccines is fine....but they should be given at least 6-12 months from each other, with measles being the LAST one given. Research has shown the vaccine-strain measles in the intestines of children with autism (it appears this part of the vaccine is very hard for little bodies to handle). Dr. Sears recommends giving the measles portion around 3 years old. No point in splitting it up and giving the measles portion first. Also, if you split them up and give them within weeks of each other, you might as well give the MMR all at once since it takes a few months for the vaccine to show side-effects.

*When separating the vaccines, remember that the chemicals and preservatives used to make each vaccine is used in each split-portion. So....splitting them means 3x the extra stuff used to preserve each vaccine.

*You can elect to give the MMR whenever you want. You are the parent and the ultimate decision maker!

*One of the most important things to keep in mind when giving vaccines is HOW MANY you are giving at once. Personally, I think giving 4-6 vaccines in one visit is crazy - especially LIVE vaccines (roto, MMR, chx pox).

Good luck! Again...Dr. Sears book is VERY good - not anti or pro vaccine, very neutral. :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the positive posts. I will check into the book you are talking about. Waiting until 3 sounds even better. I hate all these vaccines. I know they are protecting her, but it is scary all the same.

Just wanted to send my support...it's hard being the decision maker when it comes to shots and when to do it and how! I'm really impressed with how educated people are about this topic...and how respectful everyone is being!!!

Another point to make re. stretching out vaccine times: there is a "catch-up" schedule you can look at on the official vaccine site (sorry, I can't remember the exact name right now). It will tell you what to do if you delay some shots and how long you should wait before doing the next one. Another nice thing to note: some shots that typically have 2-3 boosters if you give them on schedule will have fewer boosters if you wait; they knock off some of them depending on the age given. This worked to my advantage for a couple of my kids. Make sure you are familiar with that schedule, though, I had to correct a nurse at my ped's office and was glad I had printed it out "just in case".

Great info!

We were/are on somewhat of a wacky shot schedule. We adopted our DD from S. Korea and they do their shots on a different schedule. Luckily for us (and DD) S. Korea's shots are the only country for international adoption that does not need any of their shots re-done. That means that DD did not have to have any do-overs of ones she received in Korea, but it also meant we had some switching around to do to get her more on the US scahedule. At 20 months she is still behind on some of the shots she is"supposed" to have but will eventually catch up before school starts.

I am very lucky that our we have used the same pediatrician since my DS' adoption 6 years ago, and he is also a parent of a young child so he seems to take special considerations for my kids and the vaccination timeline all in stride. :goodvibes

Ditto on this!!! We opted to not give Brady the roto one - yet every freakin time the nurse would come in to give him his shots, she would have that one with her. If I hadn't been extremely anal, asking her what each one was before injecting him, he probably would have gotten it!!! I would have been pissed!!!

Oh - another good fact - you can request the serial # and batch # from each vaccine/shot that your child receives. May sound really anal, but recently there was an issue with some HIB shots being contaminated at the Merck (sp?) plant, and they identified them by batch and serial #. I immediately knew Brady wasn't affected because I record all this stuff down. Ya just never know when that info could be handy!!!

It is nice to see that this hasnt turned into a debate!

Our little girl is turning 1 in two weeks and we are not doing the MMR at 12 months. I am not even sure we will do it at all, but at the very least, we are going to wait and/or split them up. Neither myself nor my husband are very comfortable with this vaccine, so we are going to wait.

My son got his between 12 and 13 months. Can I just add this - not a debate at all...He is scheduled for shots at his 2 year appt (he will be 2 on 2/28) and I plan on delaying whatever those shots are - I dont even know what they are - until the summer.

In my mind with no data to back it up, giving my son the mmr shot in winter just caused him to be continually sick though mid April. Between colds and possible allergies and everything, I just think winter was the wrong time to do it. I think his body was so busy with that shot, it just left him open to everything that was around.

I am not saying he won't get sick next year and possibly even allergies, I am just going to let him fight those off and not worry about the shots too.

So basically if you feel like delaying it, maybe pay attention to the season too?

OP here again--I was just checking into the schedule of the MMR on a site called babycenter and it says the recommend the first dose at 12-15 mos and then the second dose at 4-6 years. It also said that the first dose can be given 28 days after the first (although I would never do that), but I guess if I wait until at least 3 to give her this shot, then she could still get the second dose before Kindergarten with no problems. I just couldnt remember how many doses of this they got and when. Thanks again for all the positive input.
Im still debating about the chicken pox shot. Only my 3rd child has had this shot. My first 2 actually had the pox and I gave my 3rd the shot when she was 4 as we were approaching a Disney trip and she had not come down with the pox by then. It was spring and I was terrified she would get them right before we went or while down there so I got it for her. Im not too sure if I want it for my 4th child or wait and see if she gets them on her own. Anyone have any feelings about this shot?

thats exactly why we waited till 3. then they all get it before kindergarten.
we never got the chix pox one ar the flu or rotto.
just check the laws in your state, some public schools are now requiring a flu and a chix pox to enter school. im in MA and we dont need them here. but in NJ you do(sorry didnt notice where you were from).

Most schools do require them to have all those shots, but there are ways around it in just about every state. You have to fill out paperwork, but it can be done. We arent sure we will ever do the MMR or the chickenpox.

no, in MA chix pox, flu and roto are not required and i dont need to get around them. the others are. of course i could fill out the paper work to not give it to them, but i am in the camp that some vaccines are important and others are not. the 3 i already mentioned, are not.

I never read other posts on vax questions, but if you want to get some good info, I would suggest the forums on mothering dot com.
