I was just watching National Geographic's Most Amazing Moments and they were doing a countdown on unusual predators or something like that. I only saw the last few in the countdown, but one made me get teary eyed and the other made me cry.
The teary eyed one took place in Japan and was about a swarm of 30 giant hornets that raided a honeybee hive of 30,000 bees, killing everysingle one of them. I just felt so sorry for the honeybees, they were doing their best to protect the hive and the hornets, who were about 20x their size, were relentless and just tore through (literally) any bees in their way.
Then, the last one made me cry a little. A mother hippo just gave birth to the cutest little hippo baby. Not long after birth, the hippo must've swam too close to a male hippo, following him a little bit. The male didn't like his space being intruded upon and he went after the mother.
The mother swam as fast as she could, with her baby at her heels. She did the best she could to protect him. Then, to teach the other hippos a lesson not to bother him, and to prevent the baby from becoming a threat in the future, he chased him down, chomped on him and shook him until he died.
The mother tried to revive her baby's lifeless body at the bottom of the pond, to no avail.
I know this is nature, and these things happen. Why did watching these affect me so much? Is it because I'm a new mom? Maybe, but come on, these are honeybees and hippos for goodness sake! Something's the matter with me.
