What's the drive like from the Boca Raton area?

My dad is moving to FL this coming Wednesday! Crazy to think he's leaving us all in the Northeast, but he's very happy. So many trips to come to the Boca area. What is the drive like up to Orlando from that area? Straight shot, traffic, boring, things to see along the way? THANKS!

Pretty boring ride along the FL turnpike. Straight shot taking about 3 hours plus pit stops.

Easy peasy from Boca to WDW. As OKW Lover says, it is all Florida Turnpike and the 3-hour estimate is right on the money. You'll have some traffic going through West Palm Beach, but after that, it's just open road. It will bore you to tears, but very easy, comfortable drive -- usually with light to moderate traffic depending on time of day.

And consider purchasing a Sunpass or E-Pass transponder for use while in FL.

YES!

Get a SunPass portable transponder. You can move it from car to car, so if you fly down and rent cars, you'll always still have SunPass. I think they cost $20, but they are well worth it. If you're going to be driving down, and using the same car for several years, you could buy the little $5 SunPass sticker and save $15.

Also, it varies from place to place, but SunPass usually gives you a nice discount on the tolls -- typically 30%-50% here in Miami.

If you come down to Miami -- and you SHOULD -- all of our toll roads here are SunPass or Bill by Plate only. There are NO toll booths in Miami-Dade County.

EZ Pass may or may not work in some places, but it does not work in most places currently.

Depending on what time/day you leave you can make it to WDW from Boca in about 2 1/2 hours.

We take the Turnpike (from Glades road) to exit 249 which is Osceola Parkway. Osceola will take you straight into WDW (toll roads so I would purchase a Sunpass).

You can also take I-95 to Fort Pierce and catch the Florida Turnpike the rest of the way if there is traffic or an accident on the turnpike.

You can get from Boca Raton to Disney World without paying tolls. Just take Interstate 95 north to State Road 192 west. I love driving on SR 192. It's a divided 4-lane road that has very little traffic. Eventually, it turns into Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy in Kissimmee, which is on the south side of Disney World.

Just because I already have it on my server, here's what State Road 192 looks like:

I-95 to SR-192 is roughly the same distance (198 miles) as taking the Turnpike (194 miles). It does generally take 30 to 60 minutes longer due to normal traffic. Traffic tends to be bad in Kissimmee...although it's mostly due to stop lights and not the "at a dead stop on the interstate" that occasionally happens on I-95.

If you're looking to see what Florida used to be like before the high-rises arrived, I recommend making a detour along the Indian River up through the Melbourne area. I think that area is one of the most beautiful in the state. Driving north on State Road A1A, you'll get views like this:

Here's potential detour route from I-95 heading north:
