I booked a GTY for the first time ever. I am patiently waiting for my room assignment. In the meantime, to help pass the days, I fantasize that I get an upgrade to cat. 4A, while I am only booked for an 11B GTY.

Funny, right? LOL LOL Hey, I need something to get me through these days of waiting. :rotfl2::rotfl::rotfl2::rotfl:

So, how big can an upgrade be? What's been your biggest upgrade? Whether GTY or a surprise upgrade at the port.

We went from a 7A to a 4A.

8B GTY to a 4E. I was NOT happy - I hate being that low and that midship.

I have never had the "fortitude" to ask for an upgrade. How would one really go about that sort of thing?

I don't think they asked for one, they were given it base don the ability to book the GTY room they chose. Upgrades at the port have a price matrix based on what you booked. They are not free.

In the case of GTY bookings I certainly didn't ask for that upgrade. Because of the way a GTY booking works, you will be assigned a cabin in that category (example 8B) or better based on what they have available. While sometimes people get upgraded from their initial/selected cabin, that is usually only done much closer to the cruise and usually only for some kind of maintenance reason (or the guest performer's family needs a cabin - yes, that has happened) - not as often to make room for someone who booked the category as a GTY. My guess is they figure that people who book a specific cabin did so for a reason while people who book GTY are more open to whatever and moving that person will cause more of a problem.

Though some people think it is, booking GTY is not an automatic way to get an upgrade - go read the thread and you'll see people reporting they were assigned their GTY category and are "disappointed" because they were hoping for a higher category.

As for asking... I've certainly never done it. I have heard of people asking at the port and if there are upgrades available being given the price differential - if they're willing to pay it, voila! new cabin. Most of the time I've cruised, however, they have had the "This cruise is Sold Out. No upgrades available." sign up at the check in counters (and Guest Services for the first couple of days).

In my experience, the asking (or "asking without asking") for free upgrades is much more likely to happen at the parks - either with an outright "Any way you can move me into a better room?" or some kind of talk that hints that an upgrade would be awesome but they don't want to come out and ask for it "It's little Suzie's 5th birthday! And her first visit to the parks! And... [more quiet] Her puppy died last week..." (I actually heard this one once ("little Suzie was not the girl's name). Thankfully it didn't work.) And I'm with you - I'd never have the cojones to do either of those!

If you ask for an upgrade DCL will assume you want to pay for that upgrade. Comp upgrades do happen but are much more rare than these boards seem to make it. DCL does and can upgrade for special reasons at their discretion but mostly upgrades are done to suit their inventory requirements on any given cruise.

Upgrades (if available) at the port are much less expensive than trying to book the same upgraded room before the cruise. Lately there has not been much availability for upgrades at the port but they do happen from time to time.

We received an upgrade on the Wonder in 2006. We booked a cat 11b and had been assigned a room number. It wasn't until we received our KTTW cards that we noticed a different stateroom number, and when we arrived we were in a cat 9b and enjoyed our porthole and split bathroom.

Can anyone point in me in the direction of wrapping my head around all these special bookings (GTY, etc etc,)?

As noted, if you ask for an improvement on your room, you'll pay the full price difference or close to it (often referred to on other cruise lines as an "upsell")

If DCL just places you in a higher category room it's an upgrade.

I would be willing to pay something for the upgrade. One would think that DCL would take less than full price or too close to it as they had the potential to leave port with no one in the room.

I am not a person who expects anything for free. Just a modest discount than full price.

It seems like lately they have been filling the ships at the end with florida, military and interline rates.
