What's the biggest upgrade you have gotten?

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. I wouldn't expect them to actually discount anything until the absolute last minute. I know that there are always times when upgrade happens - hotels, rental cars, etc. - just want to have the knowledge to leverage myself into being able to work into one at port. Its always a crap shoot really - we really want to sail during very specific events like Merrytime and the Panama Canal - so those times would be out of the question.

I wonder if longer cruises would have a greater opportunity for a port upgrade than their shorter counterparts.

Thoughts?

I agree...random actual upgrades do happen from time to time. I just did a road trip from Nashville to Bend, Oregon and then flew from Oregon to San Fran and got upgraded to business first for my flight from SFO back to Newark (5 hour flight). That has never, ever happened to me and it was completely random. I kept thinking they were going to haul me out of my seat. It was heaven, especially since I originally was bumped from my aisle seat to a middle seat due to an aircraft change. was not looking forward to that long flight in a middle seat.

I cracked up when I got seat 7A...getting drunk on a plane (for those that know the Dierks Bentley song) LOL

On my upcoming sailing, it was the same thing. There were no Oceanview rooms left that you could book (other than GTY), but there were some verandahs. I figured if I booked an Oceanview GTY, I would have a good chance of actually getting a verandah. nope. I got a 9C Oceanview, exactly what I paid for. Somehow they found a room.
Sounds like someone with an Oceanview upgraded to Verandah before you got there. Essentially free money to DCL since they just had you switch rooms with them ;)

We paid for connecting inside cabins for our son's family. THEY got connecting ocean view cabins, we were in an inside cabin across from them. We were happy for them!

We've only gotten upgraded verandas on Princess. Nothing on DCL for us, and we are Platinum.

Love that song. At about age four my youngest used to say in the car, "Can you play drunk on a plane?" Oh no. That doesn't sound good. :P

We booked adjoining staterooms (cat 05D) and we don't expect an upgrade. We figure since we and our friends have linked ressies and have requested (and booked ) adjoining rooms we won't get one (not that we ever do at WDW).
We couldn't afford to pay for an upgrade :) but won't say no to a free one..

I am hoping to upgrade to a royal at port. Since there is only one available I know it's a long shot. Would love to hear more about your experience sarahandgreg
It was incredible. I went to the GS desk to see if an upgrade to a bigger room was available. The CM said there are no upgrades and then she did a double take at the screen and said " well actually there is an upgrade, its the Royal Suite". I didn't even ask the cost - I just said "yes Please". She then said its $1000 - I couldn't believe it. Neither could the CM - she said that it must have been a last min cancellation as its usually booked solid for months.
Anyway once i had paid the Rock Star treatment started. A CM appeared from a door and whisked us straight onto the ship - no messing around we were first on way before anyone else. Straight into concierge lounge to meet the Concierge staff and then straight into the Royal Suite to be shown around and basically waited on hand and foot. We hardly left the room - the balcony is huge - hot tub and bags of space and furniture outside. Just amazing. All the restaurants came to us - proper waiter service - amazing. Didn't want to get off. lol

How long was the cruise?

On DCL, in 10 cruises, have never gotten an upgrade! On HAL we got bumped from an oceanview to a verandah, and on Princess last year we got bumped up from a regular verandah to a mini-suite for free!

I don't remember the category upgrade but I went from an inside stateroom to a window view.

We were given an 11B when we booked IGT once... I guess technically an upgrade since we could have gotten 11C..?

Yep.

We've gotten "lots" of upgrades that way. Most cruises we've booked 9C GTY and gotten 9B. As I noted earlier one cruise (well, 2 as they were B2B) we booked 7A GTY and got 4As on both cruises (different rooms).

Last summer we upgraded from an inside to a verandah in the Disney Wonder to Alaska for about $1200 which was awesome!

But the very best was our very first cruise with Disney, 7 day Mexican riviera from LA upgraded from inside to a Royal Suite (the Roy Disney Suite) for $2000. That was 2012. It was a sweet experience.

I thought we were talking about pixie dusted upgrades?

Your odds are actually twice as good as you are thinking :-). There are two Royal suites on each ship, the Walt and Roy suites.
